I am going to replace the waterpump on my 1986 40hp evenrude. what I need to know is how to disconnect the shift rod that goes to the gearcase. please help jlb

Don't know your motor but a lot of folk swear by removing the carbs to gain access. You can also service the carbs while they are off. Otherwise you could use a 1/4 inch drive swivel and a variety of extensions to gain access. This depends on the individual linkage though and how it is attatched.

Then have a look and see if taking the carbs off would give you access. Have a look and see if you have a bolt going through the linkage. Post a photo showing your issue. Your description does not help much either.

I have a 1977 140 hp evenrude and that has the linkige at the bottom of the carbs to disconnect {pain in the but} and was wondering if this 40hp was the same way or some thing different
