I have a 1991 Johnson 175. The waterpump went out and i am attempting my first replacment. I am having trouble getting the lower unit off. I helped a friend work on his Mercury and the unit dropped right off. Mine w :( ill not. Is there a pin holding the shift linkage that I havnt found yet? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You

Romove the bolt that goes thru the shift linkage. It should be under the carbs. It will take a wobble socket.
I think there will be 6 bolts holding the lower unit on ( if it is like my 200)

Hey Bigfish,

If the lower unit is dropping a bit, but not coming out, then you've only missed the shift linkage bolt.

If the lower unit isn't dropping at all, then you've missed some other bolt. Don't forget the one underneath the trim tab.

Get your buddy that you helped to give you a hand putting that lower unit back on. Can be rather awkward trying to do it yourself.

Good luck!

Brew

Re: Waterpumps OMC

I just did my '89 gt150 (crossflow) for the first time last week. I guess you also have a crossflow. I was a little freaked about getting to the shift linkage bolt hidden under the bottom carb, so I took the bottom carb off, so I could know what I was doing. It's down there. Perhaps it was a bunch of extra work, but that was the only way I could see doing it for the first time.

Good luck,
Duck L.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HAD TO PAY $300 TO REPLACE A WATER PUMP. BECAUSE COULD NOT GET FOOT TO COME OFF AFTER TAKING GEAR SHIFT BOLT OUT. PROBLEM IS ITS A HOOK ON THAT SHAFT YOU MUST HAVE MOTOR STRAIGHT AND THEN MAKE SURE THAT HOOK ON GEAR SHAFT IS NOT CATCHING ON THE TUBING ITS IN. JUST MAKE SURE MOTORS STRAIGHT OR YOU WILL NOT GET IT TO DROP DOWN BECAUSE OF HOOK ON GEAR SHAFT CATCHING INSIDE TUBING?/ IT WORKS IF KNOW TRICKS?/ ALSO TAKE OFF OTHER BOLTS HOLDING FOOT ALSO REAR ONE OVER PROP.
