hi folks

in addition to the question of the impeller design on a 8 hp evinrude year 1980, i had the following:
after engine sitting for more than a year it started quickly. working it for a few minutes it did suck water and throw it out but not perfectly. but at the end it stopped throwing water! because of that i stopped it.

today, after opening it and finding a lot of dirt in the cooling system (near the impeller box) did some cleaning but when turning engine on (in neutral) for less than 90 seconds it did not throw any water outside and it heated rapidly! tried to see the hose that throws water it was clean. tried to see the part that is connected to the hose (that connects the hose to the engine block???) it was opened.

my question is, could that be a failure in impeller (i doubt it won't function at all after first trial did some work).
could it be that because it was turned on when there was alot of dirt it blocked some part?

could it be because i better have put it in gear and not neutral?

is there a way to check if the system is clear by some air pressure or so? or vaccum or something?without turning the engine on!

thanks in advance

To be on the safe side, change out the impeller and related parts-wear plate, housing, fasteners-

It will not flow water if the t-stat is not open-

Remove and check for proper operation or replace if in doubt.

You should always post your engine year and HP in your post. If you pull the gear case off I have hooked a garden hose to the water tube and given things a good flush. Good advice above. Best of luck. Rick.

I looked it up and it says 7.5 for 1980. No matter, it shows a thermostat so I would pull that at the same time as jerry rigging a hose to the water tube. Then you will know if your getting open passage to the stat. You should also test the stat in very hot water to confirm it opens. Rick.
