BIGKASH,Provide a make, year model, and horsepower and someone can give you an idea of what average use in hours would be.Other than that,a general visual overview of motor and its components can provide an indication of upkeep. An inspection by an experienced outboard mechanic would be helpful if you are looking to secure purchase of a used motor that you don't have maintenance history of.A compression test is a good starting point.

With out knowing who the owner or owners have been and how the motor was used, once a year for a family vacation or daily for charter use it would be impossible to guess the actual hours on a motor.

This is a bit hard to tell. I know we here in Denmark says a family has an average use of a boat of 50 hrs a year. But if the motor was at a skiing club, its probably 500 hrs a year. If you do a compression test, it will show you the shape of the powerhead. Another thing is, some people can ruin a motor in 7-10 year in bad service, wrong oil mixture ( or in 5 min ) and hard use, some can operate the same motor for 25 years and still in good working condition. Do a compresion test, test the motor on water if possible, and look at lower unit oil. If price is not favorable, demand warranty, or buy new.
