hello, what ways or methods are there to "supertune" an outboard/center console boat combo to improve effiency and performance. i know of items such as trim tabs to even out the boat easier. and jack plates to adjust height of motor for optimum effiency. and i know about keeping the bottom as cleen and smooth as possible....

but what else, please add anything you have either tried or done. thanks

im trying to get every lil bit of mpg and speed outa my 1150 merc and 16foot center console(700pounds)

Remove all the weight you can, move everything heavy to the back. (battery, gas, etc) If you can get away with keeping less gas in the boat and filling up more often, that will give you better MPG. Go on a diet. :D

Edit: You might also want to try some Amsoil lower unit lube.

You may or may not want ALL the weight in the back, it depends on the hull design. But basically what ZmOz is saying that (usually) the more weight to the rear gets more of the weight off the nose.

This (usually) means less wetted surface. That means less drag and better efficiency.

Balance means a lot. Hull design means a lot. Gearcase shape means a lot. Thats the three things a racer will work on the most.

Smooth bottom? I believe that a rough bottom results in higher top speed. When I mean rough like a golf ball.... it's a physics thing. Roughness causes air bubbles to float the hull thus reducing drag.

Oh no I can hear the comments coming.

Bob

Re: ways to "supertune".....

hull is a 16'4" center console. dry empty weight is rated at 650 lbs. loaded with motor and two adults and 12 gallons of fuel is estimated at 1600 pounds. deadrise at transom is estimated to be 15-17 degrees. hull is clean with the exception of a fish finders sonar thingy that is installed IN the hull under the console. it sticks out the bottom of the hull about 3/8th inch.

i have no jack plate, motor is exactly even with bottom of hull.

i have no trim tabs at all. i have no electric trim, so i must try each hole seperately, trial and error

gimme your ideas...gimme gimme gimee

Must be a conventional V. No pad or step. Actually, now that you bring it up, a CMC (Cook Manufacturing Co. -- might be Machine Co.) trim unit may work pretty well. Model 130?? Gives you trim & tilt plus a bit of setback if I remember correctly.

Re: ways to "supertune".....

I have one of those CMC PT-130 units on a 15ft boat with a 60 Yamaha, very pleased with it. This thing is built to last!
Only thing, the relays don't like to be submerged in saltwater for too long , lol!
Remember , with the setback from the unit , the engine needs to be raised a bit. I think I have the cav. plate 2" above the bottom. (then I ran out of adjustment)
