WD40? Is nothing sacred. . . . .

I heard some disturbing news today. WD40 is no longer flammable....One tech said he spent an hour trying to get an engine to fire using his trusty starting fluid (WD40). No dice. Several comrads said the same. If you are lucky enough to get old stock, hold on to it...
Don't rely on it as a fuel substitute until you prove your can.....
This is, by far, a national crisis. Just like R12 going away.

Everybody hunker down, keep your powder dry and a sharp lookout.

I think someone invented a better idiot.

GEEZ!!

WD-40 "WAS" a good spray for dissapatting "Moisture" , and a "Short Term" fliud for keeping moisture off of some marine components. That's all!!! IT is not supposed to be used as a starting fluid. When you winterize the engine "OIL" is fine, because it will ignite, with gas, it may smoke a bit , but it will burn off. My advise "Use wd for removing moisture" only. In a 12oz. can, how long can a can last? Oh, by the way it is also good for bug bites.

Funny you should mention WD-40 for engine starting. I tried it on an outboard the other day and it would NOT work..had to revert back to the old reliable starting fluid. Worked like a charm.

John

Hey, John!! DO NOT use starting fluid in a 2 stroke. It contains no lubricant and can cause terminal damage. Get a squeeze spray bottle and load it with premix.

A few moments of silence, gentlemen. One of WD-40's many uses has been taken away from us.

AAAUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!

Red sky at night. . .
JB :(

djohns19- In the nj marsh areas which are on the west side of the shore line there is an ulgly breed of fly's which have a GREEN HEAD, they bite like hell and can give you a whelt that will itch for hours. They are also dumb, you can swat them easily but you still get the itch. I have cut a fishing trip short, because I could not stand the aggraviation. Some people joke, that they should be New Jersey'S state ICON.If there are any NJ members on this site, they will agree!Wind's from the west, fishing the best, except when the GREEN HEADS invade.

Re: WD40? Is nothing sacred. . . . .

Before usng WD40 as insect repellant, I would strongly urge folks to read the M.S.D.S. on this stuff. My employer must now get WD40 in tank form, and dispence it from spray bottles. More idiocy..Ever see what WD40 does to the pump mechanisms in those cheap spray bottles? Bloody madness, these folks that write the Material Safety Data... They must sit in a dark room, and think of ways to stop people from being productive.
So now, not only do I get more of this stuff all over me (from the leaking bottle), but it won't even fire my outboard???!!!
Well, back to putting 2cycle mix in one of them spray bottles. At least it won't eat the innards outta the bottle, I hope.

We use it for sent cover up on our bait when we go Ice fishing. I am going to put all the old cans in my ice pail cause the new stuff may not work as well.

The Pyroil starting fluid can I use in my lawnmowers advertises that it contains 'upper cylinder lubricant'. Is it enough for marine engines? They also have an 'extra strength starting fluid' that advertises 'for marine engines' but then their website only says it can be used for lawnmowers and snowmobiles. What's the consnesus?

Re: WD40? Is nothing sacred. . . . .

Well, I did a little checking around my workshop and looked at all of the cans of WD and found a big difference between the old WD-40 cans and the new.
Old can says Extremely Flammable on it and the new can just says Flammable. The can on their website also just says Flammable and not Extremely Flammable.
I tried a little experiment with both cans. I lit a wooden match and sprayed directly at the tip of the match and both cans shot a two foot flame. There was no difference between them as far as I could see.
(hope my eyebrows grow back)
The things I will do for science.
Go to their website and let them know how you feel or ask them if they need to change the name to WD-41. www.wd40.com

Oh NO, I thought when I retired, and moved to Delaware I would be done with the dreaded Green Headed fly. But NOOOOOO....you had to remind me of the nasty little Bast....How many gallons of blood did it take from me in 40 years I lived in Jersey?

Re: WD40? Is nothing sacred. . . . .

I heard that removing propane as a propellent is part of a general industrial trend for a variety of spray can product manufacturers. Many apparently have been surprized by unexpected combustion. Of course to us, that would be the best feature. I don't know for sure if WD-40 had propane, but I bet that is what happened.
