Was fuel tank vent open?

No telling what got messed with on the carbs.

Don't run the motor until it gets fixed. If the carbs are leaned out, you will burn up the motor.

Get a repair manual and get back to the factory starting point on the carbs.
Then adjust and sync. Not fun but needs to be done before the motor is toast.

Wondering if the float and or inlet needle in the carb is hanging up and your carb is dry more than full.
Good Luck!

Re: we are the beverly hillbillies

I'd do exactly what you said, rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel pump diaphragm(s).
Once that is done be sure that when the trottle is all the way open that the butterflys in the carbs actually open all the way, you may need to adjust your throttle cable.

Just a thought but could the air vent on the hood be pluged.
It sounded like the day was still a good day.
