We have forgotten what Memorial Day is for.

I take a back seat to nobody in honoring the men and women who have survived serving in our armed forces or who currently serve.

But that is not what Memorial Day is for.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

We have Armed Forces Day, Veterans' Day and several other designated days for honoring those currently serving. Though they deserve honor every day we shouldn't dilute the one day designated to honor our war dead.

That is what i've always understood it to be, although the common public perception appears to be otherwise.

I remember,and I am very grateful. If not for those who gave their lives in the name of freedom,my father would have perished in a concentration camp.
Not mentioning it on this board,does not mean that it is forgotten.It is remembered in other ways.

Let us not forget those that fought and died for the Freedoms that too many take for granted.

Our boy scout troop was one of many who went to the marietta cemetery, and put flags on all 18000 graves they have there. Many of which are unknown soldiers. The overall turnout was great, probably 900 or 1000 people over all. Probably 500 - 700 putting out flags regularly. Many were young kids, who were there with older brother, or parents who let the scouts do it all. The sad thing is, out of 40 boys in my troop, only 7 actually showed for this event.

Try not to be too harsh on those who couldn't make it due to family plans out of town. Be proud of those that came. Celebration of the Freedom the fallen fought and died for is an American tradition too.

I am not being harsh on those. It is the ones who just want to sleep late the day after school ends are the ones that irk me. Lazy little creatures. These guys are required to get a certain number of service hours for the next rank. They will get the hours, then will just quit until the next time they need them. Doesn't seem right. I have already tripled the number of hours I need for eagle, and have not decided to stop working yet. Nor will I stop.
