Ok here's my point. What exactly is this supposed to teach us?

Pretty obvious to me. Stay away from Lake Norman in NC if you want to live!!!

At the very least, don't get in the water...could it be Nessies cousin? Normie:p

I would say "in unfamilliar waters, not knowing the depth or what the bottom conditions are (rocks, weeds, heavy silt) wear a PFD and ease your way in first and check it out".

I think a little reminder here and there keep safe baoters safe. It reminds us of why we need to be carefull. It also keeps us off the stupid human tricks forum:D.

Well, that short piece of info dont say much but if you look at the reports you learn that the kids jumped in the water without any flotation device, when they started struggling (water was choppy) one kid when under then the boat owner was able to get 2 out of the water and while he was doing the he lost the other kid.
What that teaches us is that no mater how good of a swimmer you are you always need to have some sort of flotation device with you. That is a rule in my boat...
Some people will ignore that and take chances, some people will go "click" and start using some flotation device now own while swimming...

I see these reports all the time, I don't feel a need to post them.
A safety forum would allow for a proper place to post them if anyone has a burning desire to do so.
Boating is inherently hazardous for sure.

I don't think the OP intended this to be a debate about whether we need to be advised of every fatal event of premeditated carelessness. I think he wanted us to know how to kill people with carelessness.

I think it is useful for iboaters to know about what happened to kill someone and what boating error (premeditated carelessness) led to that. That can save lives.

I don't think it is useful to hijack it or to make very bad jokes about it.

This thread is the strongest argument I have seen lately that maybe we need a Boating Safety Forum.

Well stated.

We are working on it. A safety forum where safety items will be gathered and posted.

I have been on iboats for some time now and this has been the most morbid year I have seen. Dockside chat has become loaded with obituaries and bad news.:(

Yes, I agree it is getting old but not as old as household accidents or senseless driving accidents but, thankfully we do not post those.

I appreciate new member's learning however, NOTHING is a valid substitute for a Boating Safety Course. It would scare member's to have an incident and the other party uses the excuse ...."I did not take a course.... I learned safety on my own......well I learned it from the internet"

The other problem that arises is to think we are above having an accident and use the arm chair quarterback method of blame....... because we "never would do that".

JB has it bang on.
i wanted everyone to know how it happened so it wouldnt happen to them.

i posted in dc because you are my friends and we can learn from each accident. kinda like the NTSB learns from each plane crash and adjusts the rules.

as it turns out, the person that died was my nephews co worker.

every time i go out with people that have never been on my boat. i pull away from the dock and have a quick safety meeting a few yards form the ramp pandamonium. i review the rules for MY boat (each captain makes his own rules depending on his level of lax/tightness).
simple things like location of life jackets and fire ext to not jumping in the water without a pfd or walking around the boat while underway.

mods.... with the debate this post has unintentionally sparked, i am wondering if posts like these should be placed in just the general boating forum. (as it gets the most viewers) then new iboaters or guests would see them instantly and possibly read, (instead of the neandrathal attitude some people have of " I don't need to see no stinkin safety forum ! im a safe boater").
just a thought.

oops
