Weak power trim/tilt on 90 Evinrude

I am hoping someone can help me with this liveable problem since it doesn't stop me from operating my boat. When I use the power trim during low speeds <15KM (I am guessing 8MPH for you US folks) I have no issues raising or lowering the power trim. The faster the boat goes the weaker the system is to the point it doesn't move. When idling, it moves up and down perfectly. I have had this issue since I purchase the boat and motor so I know that it's not the 10Amp stator plate. I had an issue with the stator plate and timer base which I have since replaced. I have not checked the liquids in the trim because the system operates okay at low speeds but if the expects think its a possible reason for this problem, I can certainly do that.

I am not an expert but I had a boat that had a similar problem. My problem was that there were bad o-rings in the lift cylinders. When not under power there wasn't any pressure so it would go up just fine but under power the engine creates extra pressure to push up and then it wouldn't move. Maybe you have a similar problem with your o-rings or seals.

Without getting into dissassembly could you tell if this was the problem by the amount of oil in the piston or signs of oil on the piston rod?

I would definately start with checking the oil level in the resevoir. Top it up, cycle it a few times, then re fill it. Make sure there are no leaks and the manual release valve is tight. Your V1 pressure relief valve may be jammed or a bad spring, which would mean taking apart the hydraulics. Do you have a manual??

I bought a manual after my stator and timer burned out shortly after I got the motor. I got lucky and found some used parts for $50.00 and then spent two weeks chasing down a pinched timer base wire that I inadvertantly grounded to the chasis during regulator re-essembly. The manual has a good description for the power tilt which I will use as a guide. I'll try your suggestion before going deeper into the problem. Summer is nearly over so no point in getting my hands too dirty until after the season is over.

Hi Andre
This is a similar issue I have on my TT. I don't believe there are any hydralic trouble shooters here on the board. I have read the OEM manual and all the trouble shooting in the manual.
I have logically (in my mind anyway) deduced that this issue is caused by orings or seals in the pump control piston on mine. I have rebuilt the TT unit and am loath to go back and get hydralic fluid all over myself again.
The only way this conditions seem possible is if the pressure is not being contained, and is bleeding into the trim up relief side that is designed to release at about 1500 psi, however, the manual states this can be caused by.

Trim up relief valve
Manual relief valve
Trim cylinder sleeve orings, piston seals
Expansion relief valve orings

You really need to have the OEM manual to see the diagrams and trouble shooting charts.

Let us know if you determine the cause of this.

Thanks for your feedback on this one. It's spring, I replaced my junker of a boat with a much better upgrade and now I have to get the motor trim back in operation.

I really didn't want to get into this too deep but if the procedure doesn't require any special tools then I don't mind going in as a first timer. I am pretty handy and confident in doing this stuff so why not. I also will be pulling the motor off the old boat so the timing is probably good too.

I should know more about the situation within the next few weeks.
