wear in control box

I have twin 115 Evinrudes and the shift lever seems to not have as much travel as they used to have, when adjusted correctly the shift lever in the engine does not fully move into forward, if adjusted to fully engage forward, there is no reverse, I remember Rodbolt once said that the controls only last a few years, anyone know what wears out? and what could cause my problem, the both motors are the same and getting slightly worse, by the way the motors have got a real lot of hours on them and the cables have been replaced a couple of years ago, if you manually engage forward or reverse with no cables attatched it works fine.

Cable stretch, bushing wear, and trunion slop all add up to create a hysterisis that will not allow full engagement and that can be very bad for LU gearing. Replacement is the only option I'm aware of.<br />Good luck

i do not think it is cable stretch as they have been replaced before, but I guess that some wear in a lot of parts will cause problem, might see if I can dig up a known good box to try it before I buy two new ones.

A manual would be best here, but take the control box apart. You will find that the pivot points on the linkage has replaceable nylon bushings. Inspect these bushings, and pivot points, and replace as needed. Clean, and regrease every thing as you go. This should clear up your problem. Post back if you need more help.

I have had control boxes apart many times and am familiar with the internals, might see if I can buy all the nylon bushes I can and give them a try
