Set up a dial indicator and see what side to side play you have, then try to find out if it is excessive.

If there is that much goo under the plate, the upper seal might be bad. Was it giving you the "lean sneeze"?

I just got this motor, actually. The seller started it for me and I had it running briefly in a barrel, but that's it, so I don't know yet about said sneeze.

Are you saying that, if the upper seal was bad, the fuel/oil that would leak out would run down and create a thickened goo as it dried out? I'm just trying to get a picture of this because the retaining ring (under the brass armature plate support) is well below that seal, isn't it?

Also, the screws holding that brass aps in place are super tight. I can't get them to budge. Do I dare use some a torch on them? I sure don't want to melt any seals, etc, or warp anything.
