Hi,
Ive been making a weed eater outboard, out of a long bit of cromed piping, scooter steering system, 3 hp johnson lower unit, 12.9 hp chrysler mounting clamps and a Ryobi engine. I've tryed many steering techinques but I think the scooter one is the best. I've also found out that the 3 hp johnson prop turns the right way. Since most other props spin the wrong way. I've also taken out the water pump and machined the top to fit the weed eater.
I will keep up dating on how I go but hopfully it works!

Re: Weed eater outboard

cool project. let us know how it turns out. you can get props that will spin the other way and move you forward, but they probably cost more than the rest of the motor:) check out youtube for lots of vids of folks who've done the same job.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
all most finished!:D I've welded up the lower unit bracket, finished the stearing, made the tiller handle and just need to get a motor, hook up the throttle/stop switch and seal off the lower unit bracket, then I'll be out on the water fishing.:)

Hi,
I'm not really worried about the noise because I'm just using it for my kayack to drop off crab nets near the shore, might use it in the Murry River to catch some yabbies once the flow slows down. will try and get some pics when I find out how.:) Thanks!

Re: Weed eater outboard

FINALLY FINNISHED MY MOTOR!!!!!!:D
I tried it out with a 25cc Homelite motor but that wasn't powerfull enough so I've since upgraded to a 31cc Ryobi. When I tried it out with my 25cc motor it just wouldn't start an it was only in a bucket, I haven't tested out the 31cc motor so hopfully that works.
Also how do I post pictures on here?

Re: Weed eater outboard

thanks Bob_VT,
thats been helpfull, I will post a picture when done. Sorry about the late responce.

Acouple parts of the weedeater have been dammaged:facepalm: which hase set me back a few weeks because i needed to find the part off another weedeater. What happend was I cut the drive shaft to fit the key of the engine, over the time of test running the engine and making sure the drive shaft doesen't slip, it actualy broke the key way on the engine. I was not happy.

Re: Weed eater outboard

you will want a soft coupler between the motor and the drive. this will absorb the power pulses from the engine.

you may need to drop down a pitch or two on the prop. the 25cc motor is only about 1.4hp

Re: Weed eater outboard

hi,
thanks, those vids did give me acouple ideas on on the throttle linkage, I like the idea of using a bike brake as a throttle (last video).
Today I hooked up a stop switch with a lanyard and painted the leg gloss black epoxy paint. I've also upgraded the motor to a 31cc ryobi (2-2.5hp i think, please correct me if i'm wrong) and will try and get some pics soon.

Re: Weed eater outboard

the 31cc motors are 1.6 horsepower - they all come from one manufacturer in China

Re: Weed eater outboard

thanks Scott Danforth,
I tried to give the little outboard a run today, but it would only run for about 2 seconds then stall, that is because the prop is too big. That was my first problem which was easy fixed, I just cut down the prop. My next problem was the flyweel key snaped so now i have to find a new whipper snipper or find a new flywheel......very dissapointing!!:(
