Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi,
I will be welding up a bracket up for the fueltank tommorow, oh, and I've swiched back to the homelite simce the mculloch shaft was only about 15mm where as the homelite was 25 mm (standard shaft size). When I say "shaft" I mean the pipe that the wngine slides over with the drive shaft inside. I will need a lathe to make a better copling between the motor and drive shaft. If I came across a whipper snipper with a clutch in it, this project would have been finnished months ago. I will keep updating as I go.
This project might not be dead yet!

Re: Weed eater outboard

you will want a soft coupler between the motor and the drive. this will absorb the power pulses from the engine.

you may need to drop down a pitch or two on the prop. the 25cc motor is only about 1.4hp

When you say "you will need a soft coupler" if I got a small peice of PVC pipe and made a thread in it to screw onto the crank shaft above the flyweel nut, then made a thread on the other end of the PVC, and on the drive shaft so it could screw onto the drive shaft, would that work? May need to put a pin through the drive shaft to stop the thread from stripping. But would it work?

Also Today I put a bigger fuel tank on the motor, I will have to take another photo of it soon.

Re: Weed eater outboard

Hi all,
Okay Ive started again building this outboard, thrown away the old version and I'm currently buildin a lawnmower outboard, not a whipper snippper outboard. I have an Australian built park lander mower, a 3.5 hp mariner lower unit with foward and nutral and ive build the mid section from scratch. its looking similar to a brittish seagull. I've come up with a good drive shaft-to-engine cupler which is a bolt with a nut threaded on about half way dont the bolt, Ive cut the bolt square so it will fit in the square drive shaft, ive then just simply put a lock washer on top of the nut then screwed it into the engine, then just tighten up the nus as tight as you can with half the bolt still sticking out which perfectly fits in the drive shaft. This will NOT round off lihe the whipper snipper coupler did. this lawn mower is a 6 hp 2 stroke engine on a 3.5 hp lower unit. it will NOT conk out like the whipper snipper did also. the only problem i have with this is the pull starter on the engine. I will have to take in to get repaird. Apart from that everything is going well throughout the build.
