Is there such a thing as a prop that will cut through aquatic weeds(weedless wheel)? I spend more time clearing my prop than fishing. The grass covers the wheel and lower unit and the cavitation stops the boat dead. CC

Re: weed prop

Charlie, I've never heard of a weedless prop, but I owned a '71 Johnson 4 HP weedless motor. The lower unit was swept back and the skeg was designed to shed weeds. I never used it in weeds all the many years I owned it, so I can't vouch for it's effectiveness, but it was a good running motor. The prop was a std OMC alum one.

Re: weed prop

I have a 1968 3hp Evinrude with a weedless drive. It has a 2blade aluminum prop - I've never tried taking it thru weeds so I don't know how effective it is. Theres alot of weeds in Lake Havasu right now, so maybe I'll see if it can cut thru them. I have another question: is a weedless drive slower speed-wise than a right angle drive? I was thinking about swapping my Evinrude for a Yamaha 3hp with rt angle drive and a 3 blade prop. With 3hp pushing a 12 foot aluminum boat every advantage (short of spending the $ to buy a bigger motor) helps.

Squeakit, a motor that small won't make any difference at all. It would only make a difference if your boat could be planed w/ the motor, which is not going to happen w/ 3 HP, no matter rt angle or weedless.

Re: weed prop

Thanks WildsOne for the reply. I'll forget about the swap, keep the Evinrude and take it out and see if it cuts weeds, then post results here for Charlie. I usually try to avoid weeds at all costs, but now I'm curious.
