Re: Weekend Boating Price Tag

We generally just go for the day unless we are camping the whole weekend, (yard needs mowing etc :()

60 miles round trip to the lake and back @ 14mpg=4.28 gals of Diesel or about $11
Average 10-12 gal of boat gas or about $25
Boat ramp fees - $4

Total = $40

I'm not counting food as we eat anywhere we are. The snack and beer consumption is higher on the water however than at home.

If we are camping and boating (normally done in three day weekends)

180 miles total in the Truck (5th Wheel then boat towing) @ 11mpg=16.3 gal of Diesel or about $41
Three nights on a campsite with water and electricity = $57
Average boat gas for three days 28 gal or about $64

Total = $162

We cook all meals at our campsite and eat quite well.
Heading home from all our fun = :(

Re: Weekend Boating Price Tag

I figured it a different way.

Total cost of the boat, purchase price, financing etc, + winterizing & storage, spring commissioning & launching, cost of marina slip, maintenance and repairs, equipment and supplies, fuel, food & drinks, basically everything that I spend over the course of a full year, and divide that by the number of times I take the boat out each year.

The answer is really scary, but the bright side is the more I use the boat the lower the cost of each ride. :D

Re: Weekend Boating Price Tag

I would say for me, depends on what I am doing...

For fishing, I can get away with 25-30 bucks for the day... (includes gas, food, bait, ice, etc.) cause I use the electric trolling motor most of the time, just use the gas engine to get to/from spots...

If I am tubing/kneeboarding, well I would say its more like 100 bucks a day... cause I use a buttload more gas LOL

On a side note:
All I know is a slab of grouper sells for $18 lb.

Man times have changed!!! My grandfather used to host big fish fries at his cabin in Homossassa, he would get grouper right off the boats at McCrae's for .50/lb (of course that was in the 60's). heh

Re: Weekend Boating Price Tag

Don't do weekends. However, a day during the week:

Truck gas:
100 to 300 miles round trip depending on where we go @ 10mpg = 10-20 gals of fuel $30 - $85

Boat gas:
20 gallons, could be as high as 100 gallons if running offshore = $55 - $275

2 stroke oil = $12 - $48

Boat ramp fees = $5 - $10

Bait = $12 - $100

Total low = $114
Total High = $518

Ummm nothing for gas since i live right at the lake

food or snacks, maybe $15 mainly for the kids

drinks, umm depends on what we are drinking, maybe $10

gas for the boat, just depends, i never let it get empty, usually fill it up every other weekend and am never going wot, usually cruising at around 20 or so skiing or tubing, maybe $20 for a fun day.

no dock fees or anything

$45 for some fun and memories isnt bad

I dont see how you people do it that have to drive hours to go to a lake or something. I guess im lucky its in my back yard. I dont think i would want to load up and drive that far.

I'm also surprised at the amount of regular travel being done to get to the lake, but I can certainly say that now that I'm a "boat guy", I don't think I could go back. If work or some other situation required me to move further from water, I'd still have a boat and I'd still go every chance I get.

I live 10km from my ramp. There is a yearly fee for the launch pass ($225) which I buy mainly because it's a nicely looked after concrete ramp with lots of bodies around to help if I'm launching alone or something. It does get a tad busy though, and that's my only complaint, but my wife can launch, retrieve, and park the truck and trailer as good as I can now so when its our turn, there's no pressure. Also, my eldest son is in charge of fenders on either side of the boat, my middle son is my "leg man", and the youngest (three) is in charge of seeing if he can catch any fish in the marina with his toy rod and hook-less lead. :D

On a typical day for us, it's just gas expenses. A tank of high-test for the boat, and a little bit for my truck, maybe $50CAD total (for a full day 4+ hours on the lake). If I go to a different lake in the area (there's probably 6 within 100km of my house), just more truck gas. My wife packs the snacks and drinks. It's rare that we have to buy anything else, but I might get a bottle of pop at the gas station as a treat or something.

Because we're so close, we go out a lot of evenings as well. I might get two or three evenings on half a tank of gas in the boat before I need to fill up again.
