Hey, I'm looking to replace my very old outboard with a new one and one of the primary concerns I have is weight. I currently have a 1973 25HP short shaft 2 cylinder Johnson outboard. Does anyone know the approximate weight. This will let me replace it with a two or four stroke of approximately the same weight. Thanks for your help.

I can tell you that a 1974 model 25hp 2 cyl manual start weighs in at 85#.
Adding electric start will bring it up to 95#.

Welcome to Iboats, Duckslayer!

For a Johnson or Evinrude that's not considered old at all. Heck, they need to be from the fourties to be considered antiques. Lots of folks here run 50's era engines regularly.

That said, your '73 came in at 80-83 lbs (depending on options). Add 10lbs to that if it's got an electric starter. Good luck finding an engine that light!

EDIT: Roscoe beat me to it! Pardon the collision.

Thanks for your help gentlemen. Darn thing feels like it weighs a bunch more than that when I pull it off the transom. I guess that means I will have to replace it with another 2 stroke to get anywhere near the weight. Thanks again

If I were you and thinking 4 stroke, I would be looking hard at the Tohatsu 18hp (~115lbs). But if portability is an issue, than a 2-stroke is the way to go since there's no worries about how you lay it, etc.
