Does anyone know what the weight of a new carb float. BRP Part Number: 0383437. I'm trying to figure out a carb problem, running rich especially at idle, floats are set correctly. I'd like to know if my floats are soaked up and heavy with gas. There is a number faintly marked on top of the floats 41 one one 46 on the other, was wondering if that was weight in tenths of grams? Mine weigh 5.9 grams +- .12 grams. I'd like to know if this is my problem before ordering new floats.
Thanks,
Brian

Don't have a clue on the float weight question. It sounds like you are covering all the bases though. But still I wonder if somebody has been monkeying with the jets? Like maybe they drilled them out a few thous?

Re: weight of carb float

Thanks for the reply FR. I took apart another set of carbs I have and weighed the floats out of them. They were lighter, they weighed right at 5.3 grams. I put on the other carbs I have, I'm gonna try it out later on this eve. It will be interesting to see if it makes a big difference. When I get my new BRP carb kits I'll weigh the floats and post the results. I'll also pull the jets and check for size before I put them back together.
Thanks again, I know I always ask the hard ?s.

I have never known float weight to be a problem, even with the old varnish sealed cork floats. Ckeck the orifice size with the proper size drill bit, or pin guage.

Maybe not on outboard carbs, but I've seen the floats in quadrajet carbs that soakerd up gas and weighed almost 50% more than they did new. The extra weight makes the fuel level too high and causes flooding and loading up at idle on the truck motors they were on. When you are setting a float with a gauge, the heavier float "floats" deeper in the fuel and raises the fuel level. So a heavy float makes a "correct" float setting incorrect, guess thats why I like a BRP carb kit (they come with new floats). I wouldn't have used a sierra carb kit if I hadn't been given 4 of them by a friend who sold his boat. Guess I should've ordered new floats to go with them.

Re: weight of carb float

I just got in my new floats, they weighed 5.3 grams, just like the ones in my spare carbs.
