I have a 18 foot starcraft aluminum hull (1982).... completely gutted. I am trying to find an estimated weight for it.... the hull is in great shape so I do not want to scrap it but rather sell it for about the scrap price. Like I said it is only the hull, no floor, dash etc.... The hull is almost perfect. The paint is toast... I can pressure wash off the gray to reveal the original white. Any Ideas on the weight?

Why not get an exact weight? Put a wood block under the keel at the front and a bathroom scale under the stern.... Balance it and look at the weight. Then swap the block to the rear and the scale to the front. Add em together and there ya go

just a thought....

Re: Weight of empty aluminum hull

Depending on the model, the weight could vary quite a bit. 600-700#

So does the aluminum breakage price, which is all they will pay for boat aluminum around here. Currently paying 20 cents.
Some online quotes are 10-12 cents.

So if you're gonna sell it for $75, I'll buy. Now, about delivery..... :)

I'll go $76.50!!!

You should have no problem getting that sold for $300, maybe ask more an come down, Starcrafts are very desirable boats and I don't think it will sit for long, if you weren't so far away I would be very interested.

Re: Weight of empty aluminum hull

Putting a "scrap value" alum boats is kinda tough for two reasons...

#1 Our alum rigs are light, that one there might be in the 500ish range, give or take, totally void of everything except the alum. Well, we know that you don't want to do all that work to gut the boat for a few hundred bux, that'd be a waste of time/effort.

#2 In many cases sellers can actually get more from the scrapper than they would from a boat buyer, which is a real bummer as many of these metal boats end up as soda cans down the road.

So, I'd just go ahead and throw a price on it and see what happens.

An 18 footer, total rebuild, with trailer, oh I'd be asking about $500, and take a little less. Somewhere in there.

I am glad to hear you are selling rather than chopping:)

Re: Weight of empty aluminum hull

id also say you are looking at way less that 800 lbs!! more like 500lbs.....depending on the thicknes..maybe even 450 lbs.

advertise that for a duck hunting project boat.....it sounds perfect!!! duck hunters dont care about floors and consoles much...they want big deep open hulled boats to carry tons of gear...and the paint isnt an issue either. they usually paint them anyway.

got a picture???

wait i just looked, you are right near me!!!

i am in on this bidding.... I scraped some clean aluminum a year or two ago and got maybe 40 cents to the pouind...you wont get that much since its dirty...

whats the bidding up to?? $80

( i have a little in reserve!!) ha ha

seriously what do you want for the hull??

Re: Weight of empty aluminum hull

The gold star goes to 'smokeonthewater'... just weighed it with a bathroom scale. It never occured to me to do that, so i did a quick check on the internet and found http://www.egyptian.net/~raymacke/Weigh.html with a great easy procedure.

W1 = first (heavier) scale reading in lbs, W2 = second scale reading in lbs, X = the distance you shifted the boat back on the trailer in inches, C = distance between trailer axle and scale point in inches.

The formula is Boat Weight = C (W1-W2)/X

I got c = 159 inches, W1 = 74 lbs, W2 = 7 lbs, and X = 19 inches.
plug it all in and I come out to 560 lbs. I just got a quote for alum at 55 cents a pound here in Poughkeepsie NY (it has been bouncing around 50 and 55 cents lately). Two years ago i got 65cents/lb for my aluminum house sideing. That comes out to something in the neighborhood of: $250 - $300. It looks like 5150adf hit it on the money!

So there you have it. An 18 foot 1982 vintage starcraft with NOTHING in it or on it except ugly paint, a little foam (dry) and a wood transom (rotten), the aluminum weights about 560 lbs. I figure + or - 20lbs for error.

I don't know the rules about selling stuff on this forum... so if you are interested I will put it out on Craigslist (hudson valley, NY) . I will post when I put it out there (most likely in a couple of weeks... just too many things going on right now...house fixing, taxes, kids school sports...etc.

Many thanks for the great input.

Congrats Bob!!!! Like it or not, you are part of the Starcraft brohood now!!!! Yaaaaaaahhhhh, buddy:D

Great to see another alum hull bound for the water again:)

ha ha, funny you should say that, I was at the scrap yard monday looking for aluminum. I really dont want to add wood to the boat if i can help it and was looking for scrap aluminum sheets for the floor. they had three 25 ft high piles of aluminum scrap...and in those piles were at least 4 row boats and 3-4 pontoons!!!!! at .60 cents a pound or less, they cant be getting $100 for those row boats..and they looked whole and decent to me!! maybe someone stole them and took them to th scrap yard!
