Re: Weight of empty aluminum hull
The gold star goes to 'smokeonthewater'... just weighed it with a bathroom scale. It never occured to me to do that, so i did a quick check on the internet and found
http://www.egyptian.net/~raymacke/Weigh.html with a great easy procedure.
W1 = first (heavier) scale reading in lbs, W2 = second scale reading in lbs, X = the distance you shifted the boat back on the trailer in inches, C = distance between trailer axle and scale point in inches.
The formula is Boat Weight = C (W1-W2)/X
I got c = 159 inches, W1 = 74 lbs, W2 = 7 lbs, and X = 19 inches.
plug it all in and I come out to 560 lbs. I just got a quote for alum at 55 cents a pound here in Poughkeepsie NY (it has been bouncing around 50 and 55 cents lately). Two years ago i got 65cents/lb for my aluminum house sideing. That comes out to something in the neighborhood of: $250 - $300. It looks like 5150adf hit it on the money!
So there you have it. An 18 foot 1982 vintage starcraft with NOTHING in it or on it except ugly paint, a little foam (dry) and a wood transom (rotten), the aluminum weights about 560 lbs. I figure + or - 20lbs for error.
I don't know the rules about selling stuff on this forum... so if you are interested I will put it out on Craigslist (hudson valley, NY) . I will post when I put it out there (most likely in a couple of weeks... just too many things going on right now...house fixing, taxes, kids school sports...etc.
Many thanks for the great input.
