I wonder if anyone can help me with this...<br />I have a 1986 Johnson 120 VRO. I need to find out the weight of it. I've had no luck with the Johnson/Evinrude site, except to find out the year of the motor by serial number. The reason I need to know is that I have been offered a new 140 Merc for a good price, but it is 184kg, and my boat already sits rather low in the water. I certainly wouldn't want it to be any heavier than I already have. Also, does anyone know when Johnson began rating HP at the prop? (there is also a new 90 HP Merc available, and if the power difference is minimal, I'd go for that)

just had a better look 170KG is for an extra long so a long shaft would be a few kilos lighter, why are you gettting rid of the old 120 looper?? pretty good reliable engine you have there, had a pair of them that had over 1500 hours on them and still going great! if the merc 90 is a new 3 cylinder is is quite a heavy motor for a 3 cylinder, the best if you are trying to get a lightweight motor around 90Hp would be the Yamaha 90, only weighs 123KG but is not a real "power machine" but goes great and very light compared to the 120 looper

Thanks noelm, sorry I haven't replied for a while but I have been shifting house. I'm just having a few minor problems with the Johnson, and that has ruined a couple of days for us. The starter jammed up one day, the hydraulics are getting temperamental. I'd really like the reliability of a new outboard. The new Merc is a 6 cylinder. I believe they're a good motor. I'm not a speed freak, but am worried that a 90 wouldn't pull up a skier on my heavy old boat; also the only good deal I can get on a 90 is a 25" shaft, so I'd need to build up the transom 5". I realise that a finer prop on the 90 would give me better pickup, but I don't know if it waould make up for the 30HP drop in power. Your thoughts?
