I have a 74 Sea Ray SRV220 Not being a big fan of In/outdrive's + my outdrive has major issues, I'm thinking about putting an outboard on it it's 21.6' long & seems to be pretty heavy, does anyone have exp. with these transoms & how much work it is to make it strong enough to hold a good size outboard or are they already strong enough as is ? size of motor needed to push a boat this size ? or am I dreaming about something thats gonna cost an impractical amount of money, time & effort. Thanx as always for your opinions.

Re: weight vs Hp

The idea is almost always to get the most horsepower per pound of weight.

I'm not sure about replacing your outdrive with an outboard. Guess that's your choice. I'd think that it'd be much easier to buy an outboard boat if that's your preference.

If you do change it to an outboard, you're looking at pulling the outdrive, engine, cutting wood to plug the hole, fiberglassing the transom and probably more. I'd think that it'd be a lot of time and work plus the cost of a decent used or new outboard.

The outboard should weigh less than your current set-up, so I assume you wouldn't need as high of hp.

Just a few things for you to think about. There's many on here much more experienced than I.

Good luck!!

I think by the time you rebuilt you transom , bought a very large outboard, possibly 2, to push it along and then rigged them in you'd have spent a ton of money and time. I'd rebuild the out drive.

The only question I can answer is that the transom on an I\O is not designed to carry anywhere near the weight of an outboard engine, as the weight of the engine is carried by the hull of the boat on a sterndrive.

Ayuh,... That pretty much sums it up,...
I've seen a 1/2 dozen hulls that was done too,... You won't be Happy with the results...
Of the 1/2 dozen,... All but 1 was Junked before the end of it's 1st season,...
The last 1 was refitted with another I/O...
Updating your driveline with 1 from the 80s or 90s is a much Better Idea..
