To start I have a 2001 bayliner 1950 with the 3.0L mercruiser. Today on the water after pulling friends around on a tube for about an hour I stopped the engine for everyone to re-board, but when I went to start the engine back up it acted like it was completely out of gas, even though gauge said I still had half a tank. After trying to start it for 10 min with starting fluid it finally did and then immediately started pouring smoke out of the breather hose and made a horrible squeaking metal-on-metal noise. At the same time it also acted like an accessory has seized because belt started smoking and grinding. After shutting down and checking oil levels (they were all fine) and belt/accessories (also fine) I started it back up about five minutes later, and every problem resolved and it acted like nothing ever happened. Any ideas on what could have happened? It maintained perfect temp and oil pressure the whole day including after the incident.
