That was a shot in the dark guess... nothing more, nothing less.

However... theres absolutly no way that mixing old oil with new will cause "chunks".

Re: Weird Gear Oil

Just curious, but is there any reason to use the specific marine gear oil instead of conventional 80w90 gear oil that I can get at any auto parts store?

ya ones made for boats the other is made for cars..... when was the last time your differential was under water for long periods of time?

Marine lube has additives to prevent foaming/expansion from water contamination.

Re: Weird Gear Oil

MYSTERY SOLVED!

Tonight, I drained out the synthetic (honey colored) gear lube, and as soon as I took the drain plug out, I discovered what was causing the little specks! It was a rotten, breaking up seal on the drain plug! As the lube passed over it, little pieces would come with it, giving the appearance that they were in the lube...

Needless to say, the vent and drain plugs both have brand new seals on them now. It was quite the challenge getting all the old gunk out of both of them too (where they seat).

By the way, I put in the Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube from West Marine. I'm going to stick with that permanently.

Thanks for ALL the help guys... and HAPPY BOATING! :D
