Weird Hyundai Sonata problem.

Got an 05 Sonata that has issues starting back up after you put gas in it.
The thing runs great until you stop at a gas station. Then it takes like 2-3 minutes to get it to run again. Then it runs great till the next time you put gas in it.
I thought that maybe taking the gas cap off and losing pressure in the tank was the culprit. But no, I've taken the cap off at home and left it off for a couple of minutes, put it back on and the car fires right up. So something about adding volume/swirling the tank is making it lose prime?
I've searched the internet to no avail on this one and really don't want to take it to the dealer.:(
Well at least it's the wifey's car and I only have to hear about it when she gets home.;)

Any ideas?

I would suspect the EVAP (carbon) canister is filling with fuel. Or you may have a clog in the EVAP system vent.

Yep, what he said ^^^

Could be swirling crap up in the bottom of the tank, clogging the pick-up, but kinda doubt it.

When you fill it are you continuing to try to "top off" after the pump shuts off the first time? The problem described above is common in Kias and Hyundais if you are doing that (over filling) and can unltimately cause you to have to replace the evap.

No, I've never topped the tank off. It's the wife's car and I know she's never done it either.
She's too cheap to fill it all the way up. LOL She'll put $20 in, go a couple days and put another $20 or so in it and repeat.
What's funny is it's not throwing up the check engine light.
She just had to renew registration and get a smog and it passed with flying colors.
Lucky me!!!!!
We did buy the car used about 3 years ago and it had around 30k on it.
If the previous owners were topping it off, it took 3 years later to act up.
Lucky me again.

+1. There's usually a couple three lines running off of the canister. One to the tank vent, another to the intake tied to the airbox, and sometimes to the intake manifold. Sounds like to me when the tank is full, the canister vent clogs and instead of the canister breathing fumes back to the intake or airbox, it vaporlocks until the canister vent is exposed. Jags are famous for this one and possibly this is what you're up against also. Remember the canister is filled with highly absorbent charcoal. When they get saturated, they quit breathing. The point you make that it's not throwing a check engine light sort of points back to the canister as the computer is looking for a vaccum condition at the tank. If the sensor is upstream of the corked canister, a vaccum condition would exist. Maybe drive around with the gas cap off and see if the light comes on would be something to try. If it doesn't, I'd say corked canister or EVAP system vent.

Had the same problem with our 2004 hyundai sonata. It turned out to be the overflow sensor gone bad. We never topped off either but without fail it would struggle to start after every fill up. We were still under warraty by 1k miles so I wont be able to help you out on price. If its like any other sensor its a $15 part and $150 in labor.

UPDATE
Did a little more searching around on the net to find out the Sonata is virtually the same car as the Kia Optima. All the replies to posts on the same problem in auto forums said to change out the PURGE CONTROL VALVE, which is located right behind the intake manifold. Did a search on cost of said item from the auto parts stores and they all wanted around $50. Went back on the internet and found the same exact part at www.rockauto.com for $23 delivered to the doorstep. Figured if I was gonna have to spend upwards of $150 for a canister plus my labor, may as well throw in $23 for a shot in the dark!
Got the part on tuesday and finally got around to changing it out this morning.
Took a whole 10 minutes.
Well I wasn't going to wait to see if this fixed the problem so............
I took the car out for a spin to warm her up and straight to the gas station to fill her up!
She started right up.:D

So I go home and tell the wifey that her car is fixed and that she owes me $20 for the gas fill up, I'd eat the cost of the replacement part.

To which she replies..................
You're lucky you got off that cheap.
I'll never get the $20 for the gas, but I'm sure I'll get it out of her somewhere else!

Thanks for all the replies everybody.;)
