Your mechanic says he is good, and he probably is, but definitely not as good as Don. Hopefully he did not charge you too much to incorrectly install a new set of points. You learn something new every day. Luckily for us, there are those such as Don, with the broken finger that are willing to share their expertise.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Re: weird problem...3L...need help

just wanted to update this thread.

this motor strarted giving me problems on july 1st......i started working on it on july 5. i took it to a boat mechanic, he changed the points and the coil and a few other small items....

the motor was still "missing".
the carb was weak, so it was rebuilt. as the mechanic had limited time, he was not able to go all the way thru the process to hunt down any anomalys.

the next day my auto mechanic dropped by for a visit when we were just leaving to water test the boat. he wanted a boat ride, so he grabbed some tools and jumped in. he reset the timing, (the last guy did it by "ear")

the auto mechanic was able to get the motor running to the point that it would start and stop bang on without any hesitation or backfiring. he was also able to determine that the spark "went away" at 2500 rpm. however, he was on limited time and had no parts, ............sooooo, back to another boat mechanic.

the next mechanic worked on it for 45 minits and was not able to determine the problem....

in the mean time, i was on the puter, on this thread.....getting asstiance from you guys. .......(before he worked on it at 3pm sat, i was running down don s's checklist, and looking for a new dist cap (as bond-o suggested)

without ever seeing the boat, putting a timing light or a wrench to it and from another country miles away......don s and bond-o had the problem solved....i was on the phone to the mechanic telling him to "check this".....he was shocked to find the problem right where don said it would be. the points were missing a spring, and would float at 2500 rpm. the dist cap was also totally toast.

after water tryals saturday night, the boat ran flawlessly....

the point of this update is.........the people on this forum are fantastic. they saved me tons of cash, and were able to out think the guys with there hands on the boat.

thanks team.......i greatly appreacate your help. its too bad your all so far away, or yall would have another life long client !

cheers

Good deal.

I was trying to follow this but I am still confused. What do you think the original problem you had on July 1st was? That it just needed a tuneup?

I get the comedy of errors once you started messing with it, but did it just need a tuneup or were the points actually in wrong already on July 1st from a prior "engagement"? That is where I am stuck.

its kinda funny.... it got me too... i've never seen the spring seperately before.
At least i had the sense to ask what it was and where it went... unlike the guy that put in your points.
Nice Save Ooops!!!

Re: weird problem...3L...need help

no....ii was running fine, then it just seemed to stop intermittently at high rpm. 3000 to 0 for a second, then instantaly back to 3000.

From the above statement, I would guess his bad cap was starting to show up. Then the point problem compounded it, and even lowered the rpm a bit.

Stacking one problem on top of another.

Yup, that certainly makes sense, matches the symptoms.
