So when I trim my motor, I am hearing a weird rattling noise. I thought it was some bolts on the alternator bracket. I tightened them up but still here it when I am moving at a moderate speed. When I'm not in gear it doesn't make any noise. What could this be? Engine seems to run fine and handle well. Only other weird issue was my engine temp gauge never read over 140 today but I did just instal a new bilge blower. Any help would be great.

^^^ this, if your trim limit is disabled or not adjusted properly you could be trimming it too much causing the u-joints to rattle. That's an easy way to shorten the life of the u-joints.

possible water intrusion to drive, check your oil level..if you hear clicking and it turns out to be the drive gears.. likely to late anyway.. bearing going in upper.. when it blows your looking at bearing replacement or a new SEI upper.. hopefully your trimmed to far is all..... that one dont cost $700

What can I do to fix this?

I do not hear any rattle when not in gear or when traveling at low speeds.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... If this is at plannin' speeds, I doubt that's the problem, as the bow would be way high, the boat would porpoise, 'n the prop would blow out,...

The oil should be at the bottom of the top vent screw hole,....

Yeah it's atbplannin speeds. I know I have a drive oil resivior above the alternator. It seems to have fluid in it. Should I drain and refill on the lower unit?

I don't think it's a bad idea to drain your drive oil and have a look at it, as imperial said you might have gotten water in there. You would be looking for milky oil and or metal flakes, your drain screw should have a small magnet on the end, a tiny bit of very fine shavings is ok but a lot is not good.

I will do that today and report back! Thanks

So I drained the oil and it seems fine. I had a tiny amount on the screw but none in the oil pan. The resivior was disgusting. It was funny and nasty. J think someone put the wrong oil in there at some point. I emptied it, cleaned it up as best as I could and flushed it. I'm letting it dry completely before filling. So would my bearings and gears be safe for now with no shavings or water in the oil? What's next?

I did see a bolt on the til of my engine near the flame resistor that was about halfway out but very tight. I'm not sure what it is or why it's half way out. I loosened it and it seems to go down into the engine. I I tighter it back on but it's not seated all the way down. Any idea what the bolt is? Is it supposed to sit flush? Thanks for the help.

Ayuh,.... Got a picture,..??

If ya fill the drive from the bottom, til the resivior is full, the drive should be ready to go,...
