Welding an empty lower unit housing

I recentely posted about having problems reinstalling my bearing carrier after taking to the shop for pulling the carrier and replacing the skeg. <br /><br />It was mentioned that if they welded after removing the carrier and draining oil that it could distort the housing. Any opinions/experiece with this? At this point I'm looking at a minimum of a new shell so 1000 plus.

I have seen several ruined by inexpereced welders usally they cut the skeg to close to the case and don't heat pack them--Bob

can you feel any thing in the carrier bore? have you cleaned it good. if it was welded to fast the heat will distort the housing. I use a 4in berry bush to clean the housing in the bearing carrier area. good luck bob

Bob, <br /><br />can't feel any reason for it to have such resistance. I cleaned all corrosion and then used 1000 grit sandpaper just to make sure I didn't have any unseen snags. <br /><br />The carrier leaks so bad around the oring that it actually will fill the dead space in about a day and overflow. Not good...

are you getting the glan nut torqued properly? that nut has a high torque value 200 lb ft if I rember right. that is what is needed to smush that o-ring against the bore of the housing to make it seal. be sure to put some grease around that carrier so it does not size up in case you need to take it apart someday. bob

Not sure about the exact torque but I know that I broke one nut putting it on so I think it's tight. But the shaft has play in it so I don't think the carrier is all the way in still. My belief is that the shell is deformed allowing oil to leak around the sides. This would account for the hard to install carrier and the leaks but I assume there is no fix for that kind of damage.

I think you need to disassemble the unit and take some measurements to see if that part of the housing is round,or distorted by the heat of the welding.<br /><br />DHP
