welding broken skag gard

Just read with interest the article on the broken skag, my I/O has the same break but not as large of piece is broken off. When welding, does the insides of the lower unit have to be removed before welding ( bearings, seals etc)or would just a change of lower unit oil after welding suffice? Thanks

Ayuh,.... It won't get That hot, unless tight to a seal or oring,...
A good Welder,+ a wet rag can keep the unwelded parts Cool enough...
