This thread has me maybe rethinking the 1988 70hp Evinrude that came with the Alumacraft I recently purchased. If I can only find a way to unstick the driveshaft from the powerhead.

So what do you guys think about this? Motor runs like a top but I am still goin to do a carb cleaning. It would be a shame for some debris to dislodge into one of my high speed jets. Waterpump, thermostat, L/U oil not even a question.

Not unless some seeped into Northern Wisconsin! The PO cracked the lower part of the exhaust housing trying to get it off.

Bonz I have had luck tilting the motor up, tying rope or plastic encased cable around the lower unit and using a come along tied around a tree. As you increase the tension gently slap the bottom I the cowl and lower unit with a rubber mallet. Just don't forget to disconnect the shift linkage first!!

It's already off the boat and in the garage which right now is at about 3 below and no heat. It's also been suggested to hang it upside-down. This thing traveled 3.5hrs down I90-94 completely unbolted with a strap around it and it still hasn't come lose.

I have hung them upside down with no luck. Plus what happens when it comes loose if it is hanging? Have you tried the oak wedge/shim trick yet?

Don't really think it's going to come lose by hanging. Though I have though about taking a cut-off wheel to the exhaust housing as it is ruined anyways and seeing if I can get some penetrating oil onto the shaft. But for now that will just be a side project as I still have the boat to rebuild. Can't wait for the weather to break and warm up again some day.

I'll be looking for your rebuild post on that new Craft! Any ideas yet?

I am about to start a thread on it. I have many hours already into it, just need to get some pictures up. And when I had my last stuck L/U I drilled a 7/16" hole in the midsection and sprayed the heck out of the driveshaft, upside down. Let it soak, then went at it with a comealong. You could always lay the motor on its side and tie it to a tree, then ratchet strap the lower unit. Will work like a charm. Then if you decide to reuse the mid section, you can put in a 1/2" tap and just put a short 1/2" bolt in the hole that you drilled in order to spray penetrant on the shaft.
