Driving to my brothers today early, i came across an Ugly camo leaf -spray -can boat with a 9.9 johnson 9r-70c outboard. Has a really nice 1997 Karavan trailer, and the boat is something called an arkansas traveller. Narrow at the back, deep V at the front, and high sides. Quite original. So..for 750, i towed it home 70 miles to the dismay of my neighbors. Im a mainer, so im no stranger to duct tape and camo.. But this thing is Fugly. So..after looking it over for about an hour thinking what plan i have for it, i water up the barrel, and proceed to see if the old outboard will fire up. 5 pulls, and she fires.. Runs rough, but runs..Some adjustments to the low and high speed, ( idle control is on the handle weird..) and it runs for a bit and coughs. Then no run..Bummer. so i then pulled the pull start right out of the spindle..and if anyone knows how that verticle thing works .. please let me know.. Seloc sucks on that particular section. well.. I notice a very strange grinding, scrapin noise at this point when i turn the flywheel by hand..took the plugs out, and sounded worse in the plug holes..FRIG..thought busted ring, or crank issue..or something in the flywheel scraping. Tough noise to figure..so out comes the air compressor, harmonic ballencer / puller and impact wrench. off comes the flywheel to inspect. Nothing scraping in there, so i figure im done.. broken ring. Turns out, what im hearing is the new impellor the guy put in before i bought it squeaking in the housing, and travelling the exhaust so it sounded horrible. Put it back together, took the rope start from a 1941 2.5 i broke a few days ago and fired her up enough to get kind of adjusted..SO i have now a very old and cool set up boat, with a 9.9 running, but with a messed up vertical pull start, and a nice karavan trailer for 750. the boat has a drain that drains thru the bottom of the boat with a spring as well.. Not too confident with that. I think it's a poor setup, and probably stuck firm.. Should i drill another real plug hole and seal it with 3M maybe?

The through the bottom plugs are great they creat suction with a little speed,
drain quicker.
9R70 is a 70 9.5 a little differen't animal than the 9.9.
Rope replacement.Assuming unit is undamaged.Use a heavyduty screwdriver inserted in top of pinion into the slot in upper spring retainer.Turn approx. 20 1/2 turns.where rope anchor is accessible;engage pinion in flywheel and
insert a wedge between upper bearing and pinion.Thread rope through anchor hole in spool and hole inlower motor cover.anchor inner end with a knot install handle. No discussion of rope length; lets assume yours is whole and measure.
good luck.
