So, here's how the transom looked after I removed it- in THREE days of hard labor!

And here's how the area looked afterwards:

Originally I thought that the PO must have glued it in place, but looking at it now I think the problem was more that it was SO waterlogged that it had actualled swelled and fill every little nook and cranny. What a PITA.

Looks like you had a bit harder time than I did. Only took me an afternoon to get mine out. BUt I have more space in the back of my boat.

On the bright side you now have some mulch for the garden. I just hate rotten wood - cause just enough of the wood is not rotten to make the tear out impossible.

Moody you have never restored a boat yet huh :D:D:D. I find that term often when finding things P.O.'s did to my boats LOL.

OK. Are you trying to make me cry or something. I am nearing the point where I remove my transom (not plural) on my ss and I have to see this. It's like going to the airport and seeing a burning cessna on the runway. Not real encouraging.... Glad you got it out.

I am not familliar with the foam but the GDMF ftermarket wooden stringers screwed through my aluminum hull I am familliar with :D. My fom was in nice preformed blocks that lifted right out and went straight to the garbage can :D.

I guess you weren't told about the.. err.. gentle chain saw approach. That crappy Poulan of mine took every lick of wood out of mine in 3 hours flat. Possible angle of attack for the next transom ;)

I don't actually recall cleaning up the pile of goo from my transom. I think it just became soil before I got around to it. I must say, when it comes to transoms, the more rotten the easier it is. The dry wood (the 2 inches which were dry) was a PITA. The rotten wood was like scooping chowder out of a crock :)

$100 sears electric chainsaw. about 3 hrs max and its gone, not only that but it throws all the mulch out too. Watch the seacast video on their website, thats how the boatyards do it.

It's funny- you don't realize just how rotted something is until you start digging at it. The transom had been coated with something on the outside and was perfectly dry but the whole thing felt soft. For S's and G's I removed a pair of rod holders that were mounted to the transom and when the screws came out, they were coated in pulp. Oddly enough, when I was running the boat in the spring, there was no evidence of any problems.

is the work really that hard? I feel that I might be doing the same on my Baretta. It looks to have been repaired a few times in the past without actually replacing it.

Its hard if you use the wrong tools.
Imagine trying change a wheel with a pair of pliers.

Now imagine trying to dig 2 feet of rotted and hard wood out of a 2 inch slot with hand tools, I tried it...hehehe.. then went to sears.

now imagine sliding an elec chainsaw down that slot.
Chainsaws go through rotted wood like a hot knife in butter.

this is how the pro's do it.
