Wellcraft 21.5 Eclipse/Volvo 500 questions

Boy. Just typed everything up and then closed the window. Have to start over!!

Looking to purchase a 1992 Wellcraft 21.5 Eclipse with volvo 500 motor and duo outdrive thats been sitting for 2 years. Went to look at the boat and its in excellent shape. Been kept inside its whole life. The gentleman is asking $2000, but have him down to $1800 to far.

Long story short. The motor only has 273 hrs, but has a lot of rust and on the side of the block i found what could be a crack. The crank shaft mounted water pump is seize and it did not have a battery in it. We were not able to hear the motor turn over or start. Oil is clean, but not new, and no signs of water. Im looking for someone too look at my picture and tell me what they think about the possible crack area.

I do not know much about the volvo engines and know even less about the duo drive system. Can someone give me some guidence as to if there is anything special with this system? Is this as big of steal as i think it is for 1800??

Doesn't sound like a steal to me. Sounds like a gamble. I can't see a crack in your photo. If the block is cracked it can be replace by a Chevy 305 block. If the outdrive is bad, it will cost a small fortune to replace or repair.

How good a mechanic are you?

Yep, its cracked alright.. you can see where its been leaking & the rusted bolts below the crack ..

Im not sure if it a crack. The rust is also above the "crack" area. I think the water might have been leaking from the head gasket??

Im very mechanical. Just do not know much about the outdrive and volvo engine. Thanks guys!!

You should never buy a boat that you can't run on the water first, and that one just looks like it might be a can of worms. Cheap and/or free boats are hardly ever a bargain!

don't bother, just looking at the pix of the engine, that thing has been neglected

the oil filter has a ton of rust on it for cripes sake!

the drive system is a bit complicated and pretty spendy to have worked on too

keep your eyes peeled for a v-6 or v-8 mercruiser alpha package, thats gonna be your best bet for a diy'r

Does it help if it come with dual axle trailers with hydro brakes, a full custom cover and a bimini?!?

By the sounds of everyone, i should stay away from the boat. I'm definatly willing to put some time and money into the boat as long as i can hear it start and run before purchase.

trev turn and run as fast as you can.....Take the excitement you have and channel looking for a new boat....If that boat was free...you would end up with a 4-5000 dollar investment...
