Re: WELLCRAFT 232 eclipse repower and restoration!!!

ok I forget to tell you guys, top speed with 8 people on board+cooler was 30 mph, 3200 rpm full throttle, Im looking for some info probable I will change the prop to get my max WOT 4300, the one Im using now is a 4 blade 14inch 21 pitch.

expect 200 rpm per pitch level change... sounds like a ways to go to get where you need to be... you could try a 15 inch pitch prop if engine RPMs go higher than desired drop back to a 17...

call around to see if you can find a marina willing to let you try out different props...

OH and if you do end up re-proping you could offer your current one for sale to offset costs...

I assume you got a 1.81:1 outdrive... and a new prop (my calculator allows for change in prop slip and ratio, but I usually start off with it at 8% if a new prop is being used.. but I am just guessing on the ratio you have... a lower gear ratio is indicating you have a higher prop slippage (which isn't uncommon for larger, heavier single engine boats..)

Your 4 blade will have less slippage than a 3 blade, but it ultimately is at your discretion... What do you plan to use the boat for??

From mercury marine...

"Three- vs. Four-blades?

Four blade propellers usually:

* Plane the boat faster than 3-blade propellers
* Keep the boat on plane at a lower speed
* Give improved mid-range speed at the same RPM as a 3-blade propeller
* Provide quicker acceleration than most 3-blade propellers
* Run smoother than 3-blade propellers
* Have better holding power in rough conditions
* Are less likely to ventilate in sharp turns
* Provide better low speed handling
* Are not quite as fast on the top end as a comparable 3-blade propeller"

If you want smooth easy operation, lower RPM plane, and mid range speed stick with the 4 blade, if you want TOP end speed go with a 3 blade... I am running a 3 blade prop now, but will be going to a 4 blade as I am looking to loose some top end (I am over 70MPH on GPS WOT... too much chine walk for my comfort level) and wouldn't mind better mid range and quicker plane..

I would think that your outdrive is the 1.50:1 ratio.

I would think that your outdrive is the 1.50:1 ratio.

The SE116 isn't available with a 1.5:1...

From the SEI site:

"SE116

COMPLETE UPPER & LOWER UNIT
Replaces MerCruiser's? Gen II stern drive (1991-present)

Upper Units are available in your choice of 1.47, 1.62, 1.81 & 1.94, 2.0 & 2.4 gear ratios. As with all SEI products, upper and lower units feature all new parts throughout. Lower units available with counter-rotation."

all the final ratios are just a combination of the upper and lower unit ratios, with the ever present itterative changes made to make "better" new product ranges...

Re: WELLCRAFT 232 eclipse repower and restoration!!!

the outdrive is a 1.62.

A 1.62 drive with a 17 inch 4 blade should get you low to mid 40s top speed at 4200 RPM... but the 4 blade prop will give you much better cruising handling and speed...not to mention a drop in the slippage..

The above numbers are theoretical based on a 1.62 drive and 8% slip... a lower speed will be the result of increased slip common with bigger boats, but the 4 blade prop should help.. 17 should get you the RPM you need, but you might end up needing to goto a 15 to get the RPMs up... try the 4 blade 17 and see...

FWIW, your current setup is showing over 30% slip... WAY inefficient...

Re: WELLCRAFT 232 eclipse repower and restoration!!!

When I got my SEI drive, they recommended the 1.47 for my 24' boat with a 5.7 260hp mercruiser.

Anyway, do realize that with 8 people on board, you were pretty loaded up. A lot of prop shops will sometimes let you test out different props to determine what is best for you... but, if it were a 3 blade, probably something around a 14.5 or 15 by 17 pitch.
