Welsh plug number

Picked up an old parts motor for next to nothing...thought it would be fun to go thru and get some repair practice for when I need to work on mine. Looks like the lower unit is in every way identical to my 1979 Rude 25 hp. The only number I can find on it is on the welsh plug...The number is E3 440423..there is the letter "M" in a square, stamped above the number. Can anyone tell me what my old parts motor is?

I can't from that number. It May be the serial number..

It's hardly better than a guess, but it looks like around '71 to me.<br /><br />Search this forum for E34 and you'll see what I mean. Consider E+7 digit serial numbers only.

thanks guys...sorry not to have any more info..that's the only number I can read on the whole motor.
