Hi again. I have another problem. I have a 1979 pre-alpha outdrive with a machined hole in the upper gear case. There was paper behind some JB weld and sanded smooth and painted. I didn't know it was there until it fell on the floor in my shop.I beleive the parts guy called it a "walsh plug". They sold me a plug to fit that hole. I thought it would snap in, but it didn't. Now i'm wondering how i will get it to stay in the hole. I will try to include a couple of pictures. Thanks guys, Ken

Re: Walsh Plug?

That would explain the hacker repair. When I put the plug in place it sits in the hole loose. Any ideas on how I might get it to stay. Silicone maybe?

Re: Walsh Plug?

You get a NEW plug, not the old one, using an old core plug is like using an old gasket. Won't work.
Put some sealer on the NEW plug (if it makes you feel better, not really needed) then put the plug in place. Then with a flat punch (not too big, like 3/16 or so in diameter) and a hammer. Put the punch in the center of the new plug, and hit the punch with a hammer. When you came the center in, it expands the plug and makes it tight in the hole it's in.
Look at the old plug. You will see how far it had to be "Caved in" to make it hold.

There is a little trick to everything. Would have never thought of that. What would a guy put over that to make it go away. Can you still get the original decals?

Re: Walsh Plug?

I just had a thought. Could I have got water into my drive bellows from that welch plug, passed that kinked rubber ring. A long shot, but possible? Well, thanks again for the help. Ken
