Well, took my new to me 91' Sanger DX out on Friday... didnt go quite as well as I wanted it to. Pulled into the prep area, got the boat all ready. Did fine getting the boat launched off the trailer, but reverse was TOUGH... that boat wanted to turn real tight while in reverse, couldn't even really correct it with steering.. luckily there were no other boats around and I was able to turn around in between the docks.... took off, boat ran good, didnt stay out long, the water was SUPER choppy and it was real windy out, kind of a ****ty day to go out for the first time but oh well... but retrieving the boat was another story... the water was so choppy and windy that i couldnt get lined up with the dock right, and with reverse being pretty much no help it took me several loops around, feeling like a total idiot, i finally got it up to the dock and tied off.... naturally a big wake came in and the back of the boat caught just under the edge a little a put a pretty good scratch on the back... ill take some pics of that later for repair advice....

I was really frustrated after getting it loaded back up and my wonderful wife was being encouraging tell me things like "it was your first time, itll get better" etc, which I know she is right but I was so frustrated at the time I was ready to sell it right then and there. Then on the way home my SUV's engine light comes on and I pull over.. all fluids are good, temps are good, not running funny... I had a cranky baby in the back who was hungry and a little passed her bedtime, and am kind of in the middle of nowhere between the lake and where we live so I said screw it and we drove home... turned out just to be a MAF sensor code.

Anyways, that was Friday and im ready to give it another go, but i really need some advice on the reversing situation. Its a 350 inboard direct drive... is that normal.. it turns counter clockwise while in reverse and at a pretty sharp rate.... anyways, can I get some advice on how to control the reversing etc, or is this even normal, etc?

you have to get it up to a little bit of speed before an inboard (direct drive) can have any turning ability. My advice would be to always walk into the furthest point at the dock.....then goose it a little bit to get the water flowing so the rudder can do its job.

Have you ever piloted a single screw I/B before? They take some getting used to. As Jeff said, the rudder needs water flowing past it at a decent rate to be effective. The prop, unlike an O/B or I/O doesn't move, it's always straight ahead. Therefore, it's thrust is always straight ahead or straight astern. It's the thrust created that moves the water to the rudder that allows you to turn. And to get that water moving, you need to use short bursts of throttle...

Take her out and practice, see what the effects of throttle have on your turning ability.

Best advice I can give you is the following:

1. If you have not taken a safety course(not online) do so ASAP.

2. Find a freind with boating experience and go out a few times with him so that he can teach you the ropes. If not, hire someone.

3. Leave the family home the first time you go out with this friend so you can concentrate on the lesson.

4. Enjoy the boat with the family!

Worked great for me!

I've driven a few ski boats with just single inboards. You really do have to plan ahead for going in reverse. Like I said before, walking it down the dock to the end was always the solution for me. Unless it's a REALLY WIDE area between the docks it's almost impossible to get it under control in the space you have.

Thanks jeffski, I think thats definitely something I will be doing from now on.. even if I have to get it up to a good speed to control it in reverse, there isnt that much room when launching.. if I walked to the end of the dock it wouldnt be a problem... the only thing is bringing it back in.. im used to an I/O so when you are coming into the dock too strong you can reverse it and it will stop in line not turn away... guess I just need to get out a few times and really practice

Pulling right in reverse is normal for a Direct Drive boat. Go to themalibucrew.com and search. Mine does the same thing. Reverse is very hard to get use to in a DD boat.
