nose cone looks different than on a truck engine, the way it bolts on, truck engines bolt to the engine block, looks like yours bolts to the bell housing, so most likely a marine starter if it is for a GM, or else a very old truck starter

What about it? If you do not like the job or the color, grab a rattle can of crylon and repaint it.

If it were me, I would take it back -- complaining about the paint, and head as fast as I could to ebay to buy something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4515915737&category=50442

and pocket the $100.

Here are more starters:

http://search.ebay.com/volvo-marine-starter

Even better, support this fine board and buy it from iboats:

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...tegory=t&current_category=engine+part>starter

Take it back...period
Hot saltwater dripped on to the top of the solenoid, and eat the paint off.

and a couple marks in the screw holes of a couple bolts

It appears to me this starter was used and brought back....its used, not new. The problem now they may say YOU caused the defects, and are trying to return the starter. Good Luck!!!

By the look af that starter is has had a hard life . You should not be expected to accept goods in that condition.
Was the box sealed? If so then the starter was likely in that condition when boxed or has sweated badly in storage.
I have been 20 plus years in the parts industry. That starter is not somthing I would expect my customer to accept as new.
The marine starter has a thin plate with a seal in it between the field housing and the drive end bracket. That is what stops the vapours getting to the brush end of the starter.
Regards
Peter

BIGBAD...

I have an older (early 90's) NAPA Marine parts catalog... all they did was repackage SIERRA parts. They even use the SIERRA part numbers. If my local NAPA was to actually stock this stuff, it may be worth the premium to go and pick up parts from them for the convenience. Since they don't, I order the stuff online. Since I have to wait anyway, might as well look for the best opportunity.

Is there any way to convert a reg. auto starter to a marine starter? Gaskets or seals?

Its very hard to tell from the photos that you have posted as the flash has put too much reflection in the image.
The seal plate is right next to the black body between it and the drive end housing.
It would be only about 1/16" thick but it should be visible to you.
All the same I would be asking for another starter or a refund and purchase from either iboats or sierra.
Peter

Well,
With the Exception of the Really Lousey Paint Job,
I don't See any Problem with the 1 you Have.....

As explained above, wether it's a Marine starter or not, it'll need to be taken apart to see....

I buy from NAPA to keep a small construction company running, as well as All My boat parts........
I'm sorry you're having a Bad Time with them, But My Store takes Very Good Care of Me.......

Just a little FYI,
If you go to 1 of those cute little "High-Torque" or "Mini" Starters....... They're All the Same......
Automotive,...... Marine,.......... All the Same....... ;)

NAPA just doesn't have parts that cross into the marine Volvo 4 cylinder rubber band (Timing belt & OHC) engines. The main NAPA parts guy and the owner of our marine shop are "Family" and they just don't have the right stuff.
