Got a 1988 90hp Evinrude. 110 on all 4 cyl. Runs and starts very good. Problem?? Right bank plugs are wet and black!! Left bank is dry and brown. Is this a carb problem???

Re: Wet plugs

Will the spark jump a 7/16 " open air gap on a spark tester ?? Is the temp coming up to specs on those two cyl's ??

Re: Wet plugs

If you can hold your knuckles on top of the block after it's warmed up and idleing for more than 5 seconds, it's running to cold. You can buy a spark tester at most parts houses for around $8.00.

Re: Wet plugs

Unlikely a carb problem, as both 2-barrel carbs feed both a port and starboard cyl at the same time. If it were a carb issue, the problem might be on the top or bottom two cyls, not the left or right bank cyls. That engine has two thermostats controlling cyl head temps-one for each head. Possible the starboard thermostat is stuck open, causing that side of the block to run cold. Cold-idling engines don't have optimal combustion and may appear to have darker, wet plugs. You should be able to rent a laser temp gun from a local auto parts store, then compare the normal cyl head temps. They should be around 140 degrees at idle.
