Re: Wha-whoooo!

If the option is between a 7.5 and an 18 I'd take the 18 in a blink. Not a lot heavier, way faster and easy to get parts as they're from '57 on...

I'm watching local ads for an 18, but there's nothing there right now, there's a few of the smaller ones, but nothing like the old 18's

I don't need another motor, I got one for the boat now, so I'm in no hurry, the only thing that could be a draw back for me is that with the newer 10 horse on the boat now, it will cruise out at about 20 MPH, and I'd say that's moving at a pretty good clip for a 12 foot boat, but the boat is rated up to a 20 horse, and I can't help but think that putting an 18 on it could make for somewhat of a wild ride, but, hey, if it says it's rated to 20 horse ....by gosh, I'm going to find me something close to that

I still need to restore the tank anyway, and finish the boat, so I got time to find something

I expect the 18 hp would push your boat about 26 mph, which is what I got on my 12' tin boat with a 1960 Fastwin. Not bad on calm water, but a little harrowing in a chop.

I too get about 20 mph with the 10 hp. I also get about 22 mph with the 15 hp Fastwin (predecessor of the 18 hp), but a much better hole shot than the 10 hp.

hole shots with the 10 horse arn't all that great, and forget any high spped turns, after I did the short shaft conversion on it, I learned real quick that if your going to make a sudden turn, cut the throttle, with the back of the boat being pretty much flat bottem, a high speed turn will just about lift the motor right out of the water

The Johnnyrude 20 and 25, 1976 and before, are all 22CID motors, the same as the 1957 18HP.
