"Whale Wars" poor decisions

In an episode last night they lost their speedboat in a storm, the found it washed up on shore in some rocks, a guy climbed aboard, lowered the outboard and tried to power out and totally destroyed the lower unit, the prop and everything was gone in about 10 seconds, I don't get why they didn't just use a tow rope in the first place, It was upsetting to watch, sometimes those guys do some stupid stuff, I mean did they really think the prop was going to chew through rock! You could hear somebody near the camera man with some sense screaming no no no!

I just saw that episode last night and I thought the EXACT same thing. Why would you think for a second that a boat with barely enough water to float was going to drive off the rocks. A simple tow line and they would have still had a lower unit in tact. I did have to say that he did one hell of a job destroying it though cause the entire lower unit was gutted as a results. Not even the propshaft or gears was left...

I saw that too. My wife thought I was crazy. I kept saying "NO! Don't try it!" and groaning while he was in the process of destroying everything. I don't know if the guy who did the damage had any experience with boats in the first place. He's an elementary school teacher. Maybe he thought it was a jet drive.

I like what they're trying to do, but they're just so BAD at it!

I have a love hate relationship with this show. I like their cause, but the complete lack of planning, common sense, and boating knowledge usually has me screaming at the TV.

Their biggest problem is they have a fleet of ships that should have been left in the scrap yard where they found them.

With as much equipment as they have torn up I figure it will be just a matter of time before the sponsors start to bail out. Sure hope they are not getting any tax dollars.

Same bunch got given the vessel Earthrace, a wave piercing trimaran that was in turn funded by contributors. They renamed it the Ady Gill, and managed to get it in front of the Japanese Whaler Shonan Maru No.2 and sink it. Oh well, another 2.5 million in Davy Jones Locker.

Somebody's going to get hurt. These guys are nuts and klutz at the same time, and harassment at sea is not the solution to the perceived problem.

That one wasn't such a bad move. They took a purpose-built boat with technology that was rapidly growing obsolete and which had no function other than to break a specific world record and converted it into support for the show and the Sea Shepherds in general, while gaining support from millions of people who were outraged at what happened. The Earthrace was destined to be donated to some cause somewhere, whether a museum or a public park. I think they got pretty good use out of it.

That was another brilliant move, play chicken with a ship 10 times your size, and didn't they miscalculate and run out of gas just before that, I watch the show just to see what idiocracies (is that a word?) they pull next.
I'm all for the cause though, good people just not too experienced of a crew.

Take a bunch of landlubers, stick them in the middle of the ocean with harpoon guns pointed at them, and let them screw up everything they try to do. Sounds like a "reality" show.

Reality was never meant to be taken seriously.

Boats don't get the saying "A boat is a hole in the water that you pour you cash into". Guess they are a prime example of that in many ways.

I actually started pulling for the Whalers after watching these fools over a few shows. They are hacks at best, using bully tactics in an environment that doesn?t need or require it.

The boat the lost got their Captain some time in jail in Japan until he was found guilty and expelled from the country.

I place them in the category of eco-terrorist

It saddens me to see these whales being harvested on such a large scale, I have no sympathy, I just hope the whales are plentiful enough that it doesn't matter, same as crab fishing, shrimp fishing, or any other fishing industry.
