I finally figured out what that color is.

Brain Eating Zombie Grey.

Until the boat is repainted, I got a name for her.

I don't know what kind of paint was on the van you screwed up

ham - I'm not arguing, either - just sharing an experience.;) Back in the day, just about everything was shot with DuPont stuff - either Dulux, Centari (or Imron if you had the money - it was the new hot thing back then). If I remember right, it was Dulux enamel that the easy-off loosened up. That stuff was kind of like Rustoleum - even after it sat for a week you could press a fingerprint into it. I totally agree with your "test in an inconspicuous area" instruction.

Must be some pretty stout paint if it is still on the propeller. What a shame. Maybe you could become a duck hunter, then you could leave it as is. Your other option is to leave it, make it a fishing boat and never have to worry if your wife will want to come or not. :)

Well, if it is on to stay, I can sand it a bit and paint over it. I didn't get a chance to try a power washer this weekend as most of Sunday was rained out.

My father in law has a gas driven monster of a power washer. He has warned me, several times, that it will take the paint and the gel coat off and tear up the 'glass if I am careless. So this ought to be a definitive answer to how well the paint adheres.

Anything I shoot at with a shotgun is safe from harm. I would have more chance duck hunting with a rifle, but the fish'n'game guys get upset if you do.

I tried pressure washing this thing yesterday. With the highest pressure nozzle and the tip within an inch, a few teeny flakes of the gray paint lifted. This stuff is on good. Next experiment, paint stripper.

At least Zombie is now clean.

While preping some unfilled screw holes and a couple of gouges for marine tex, I discovered that there was another coat of paint under the brain eating zombie grey/green. A medium grey like you might see on a sheriff's or other water cop's boat. I suspect that this boat has had an interesting life.

Other progress...installing the battery and fiddling with the wireing a bit and finding a key that would turn the ignition switch got the starter spinning the engine. I also discovered that primer bulb valves were inop and the fuel line connectors were ratty. Replaced bulb and connectors. I need to get some 3/8in fuel line so I can remount the tank under the console.

With luck, if I am not rained out, I will try to start it today.

I guess I better search the forum for recomendations and reviews of stripper.

I would be cautious of paint stripper!!!!! Remember the boat is fiberglass...if it eats paint what else will it eat.....I think you are ready for a wet sand and repaint...lot less messy and I would bet the end result will look better....A good investment might be a DA sander for the large flat areas! Just a thought

I think that y'all are right about sand and paint. The pressure washer DID take a lot of the chalkiness off.

In any case, I think that getting the engine running well and filling all the screw holes and the worst of the spider web cracks will keep me busy for some time. Lots of little jobs that can be done a few at a time.

I can get a lot of use out of this boat without a repaint.

yes you can, some of my most usable boats have been almost as ugly as yours LOL. you don't have to worry about getting fish guts cleaned up right away. get it running then worry about cosmetics.
