Ive been running Penzoil to get the new 140 broken in but I'm about to swap to synthetic. Ive got a gallon of Royal Purple 2 cycle. I might pick up a gallon of amsoil just to see what the fuss is about.

Amsoil is good oil. I run it in my diesel pickup and semi. Have never run it in a boat motor though. I use it for extended oil change intervals so I don't know if it would be worth while for a 2-stroke.

I like to use Valvoline. I've used it for many years in my cars.

I like the cheapest I can get that has a TCW-3 rating. Wally brand 2 cycle marine oil is tcw-3 rated and is a very good product. Napa brand has several brands of 2 cycle oil but you must ask for the marine oil with tcw-3. quicksliver is another fine tcw-3 rated marine 2 cycle oil, at a bit higher price. myself I use the napa marine brand, when the are sold out, I go with wally supertech marine.

I use the WallyWorld oil when I premix for my Evinrude 88. I use Mercury oil in my Mariner that mixes at the motor. While they might both be tcw-3 I don't know if the viscosity is the same. A thicker or thinner oil may cause problems with the oil pump. This is per the advice of my neighbor at the lake who spent 50+ years as a Mercury technician.

To meet TCW-III specs the oil must have the characteristics including viscosity that the spec requires. Therefore if Merc (or any other manufacturer) specifies TCW-III that oil is ok to us in that engine. 50 years as a tech makes his opinion respectable but not always valid.

Any OEM oil, like Merc, Rude, Yami, etc. Anything but Pennzoil, Texaco, Valvoline or any other after-market manufacturer, with one exception - Amsoil.

Re: What 2 stroke oil do you like?

I use yama-lube for the newer Yam 150 (w/ startron and ringfree). I can buy it by the gallon w/ my own jugs from a dealer.

For my old 70 OMC and older 20 merc, whatever's cheapest--I also have a place where I can buy TCW-III with my own jug, but it's not convenient and I don't use those motors much. I don't use synthetics.
On the 70, I premix, and still treat the gas with stabil even though I have non-ethanol gas for it. I also only run it every 3-4 months or so.
I really don't know how you could ever know the difference based on what the engine's doing at the time. I've heard the brands vary by their additives and just feel "safer" withthe branded oil in the more expensive motor. I'm also only using Yam lower unit oil in thaty one; anything in the others.

I run XD-50 or Pennzoil full Synthetic in the 200 Evinrude. I run the same stuff in the 15 HP since I already have it for the 200.

Buying XD-50 by the case is a lot cheaper than running a less expensive oil and dumping 6 cans of Seafoam in the tank at each fill up.

recently bought a fixer upper motor, and the the seller added a gallon of johnson/evinrude oil in the deal, i had been using universal oil, but after running the omc oil and seeing the difference, i will only run the cheap stuff in a pinch.

Seriously, really ??

Shall we argue it use, or non use, or if it should be called a serial comma, Oxford comma, or Harvard comma?
Or perhaps we should discuss if it could possibly even exist in cyberspace.

Back to the oil.

I've been using non tcw3 rated Amsoil HPI synthetic for quite a few years.

Still have a few gallons of Pennz oil all natural organic in the shed.

Yes, yaaawwwwnnn.
These oil threads just aren't the same without LubeDude chiming in.

I am curious about this since there has been so much writen about TC-W3 CERTIFIED oils. Is Wally brand tcw-3 Rated or Certified ?

Re: What 2 stroke oil do you like?

When I had my Force, WM had a sale, $11.99/gal. I bought 3 gals., and then when I sold that boat, I gave what I had left to the buyer. I picked up a 59 10ho Johnson over the winter, and Wally World had Johnson/Evinrude oil for (I think) $12.99 or something. It was less expensive then the Wally World brand TCW3. I'll probably keep using that as long as the price is low. If it's rated/certified at TCW3, then it's TCW3 oil, and meets the specs (like silvertip said), so from that point, the price is the deciding factor for me.
