Re: What a boat ramp is for!!!

I'm with fireman on this one. I understand that there are people less experienced in boating and need more time to do it right, but some people just have no courtesy or common sense about it. forgetting a drain plug can happen to anyone, and its an unfortunate thing to happen, but some idiot KNOWINGLY wasting everyone's time is inexcusable (these people are ALL OVER THE PLACE).

Personally, i wouldn't have put one of those things on there but i still think it was funny and he probably deserved it.

So messing with another persons rig makes you as big of a jerk as the other guy fireman. In fact, a bigger jerk, because the other idiot can blame stupidity.

Maybe next time try explaining it to him like an adult.

Sorry but courtesy is not rocket science. If your too stupid to realize don't work on your car in the freeway entrance ramp then you should not be driving. The boat ramp is no different. No one would tolerate blocking the freeway entrance even if your a new driver. So in this case you get what you get.

I think this topic comes up just about every year. There are several thread on this. I have been part of the rant, but, I have tried to be more patient. I find that most people having problems or don't know what they're doing are very receptive to help and tips.

Re: What a boat ramp is for!!!

So, I pull in the dock yesterday evening . As I am docking my boat this guy in a new 23' Crownline is making his 3rd or 4th approach at his trailer. I finish tieing up my boat and everyone else starts packing up jackets in compartments, deflating tubes, and etc...... As I walk the pier between the dock and the ramp he pulls his boat in and out 2 times. Then stops athe waters edge and gets out to try to winch it down more.. I have stopped to watch at this point. I notice he has the winch lead ove the rubber bow V and run down to the bow eye. I simply walked over and said excuse me, can I offer assistance.. I then point out the winch strap. and tell him how to fix. At this time he goes to back in for 3rd time. I said hold on and just walked over released the winch and the bow eye clasp. Lifted on the boat and pulled it out of the V. the attached it correctly. Then stated he had a nice boat and would hate to see it torn up. He then said thank you I'm new at this. Then proceeded to pull up 15' feet and block all 3 lanes for another 15 min. And funny enough exactly behind my trailer... So I started my truck got in applied the brakes and shifted to reverse. Just to sit there for a min or two. So back into park and I get out lean on my trailer and just wait. After 5-10 min I clearly see 2 other boats on trailers on the ramp and 3 other trailers waiting to load on the other side. So I patiently walk over to his crew cab denali truck all for doors open and find no one. I then walk to the other side and find 1 guy taking stuff outta the boat. His othe 3 buddies are not in sight. I ask him can you please clear the ramp everybodys waiting.. He says I will asoon as my buddy gets back from the bathroom with the keys he's driving. I then stated if he wanted to make friends here it would be best to pull up and over to the side out of the way next time. As soon as i walked off he met the next person waiting who apparently was not in a good mood. Needless to say the truck got moved quickly, I think his buddies heard the ruckus in the bathroom. But, I must say by the time I got to load my boat my passengers had everything ready to roll... so it was a fast load in-out strapped, plug out and on the highway to pass him in the first mile or 2. Sorry so long but I had to share....

Re: What a boat ramp is for!!!

Oh, Holiday weekends......

I just left my big boat parked in storage all weekend and instead launched my inflatable off different beaches around the island away from the circus of the boat ramps.

It was quite enjoyable to just spend ten minutes packing my boat, motor, and gear to and from the water without dealing with the madness at the harbor. I even cleaned all the fish I caught on a piece of plywood at the beach.

Maybe I will trailer the big boat to the ramp next weekend, but it was sure nice to relax, enjoy the good weather, and bask in the satisfaction of knowing that I burned less than five gallons of fuel for the near 200lbs of fillets we brought home over the five trips this last weekend.

Re: What a boat ramp is for!!!

I pulled up to the ramp a while back and found a guy sitting in his truck with an empty trailer in the only available lane. I waited patiently for about 10 minutes or so before I went over and asked if when he was going to load his boat. He told me he was waiting for the lane next to the dock to come open because he didn't like to get his shoes wet ....:mad:

Somebody said something about a lawnmower on a boat?

I loaded my quad onto the roof of my car, drove down to the lake, and unloaded it onto the boat.

Re: What a boat ramp is for!!!

When launching at my closest ramp, there is usually a line of 2-3 boats waiting their turn. During the short wait, I attach bow/stern lines, put in the drain plug, detach the winch strap, make sure all gear is ready to go, etc. When it was my turn, I can launch in about 2 minutes.

I sat at the ramp once for 30 minutes while a yahoo tried to get everything ready on the ramp, talking, running off to the bathroom...all to find a boat that wouldn't start! Worked on it for the next 15 minutes while tying up the ramp!

When I finally launched and went to park the trailer, I wound up next to his tow vehicle. So I simply removed his trailer from the tow ball and attached my trailer tongue anti-theft clamshell to his boat trailer. For some reason, I really didn't mind buying another one...

well honestly, in my opinion, what fireman did is better than some of the things i have heard and read on this site... or even what i have done personally..i do not blame him in the slightest.Actually someone doing what that man had done would have probably came back to a trailer sitting on the ground with the tires in the truck bed minus the lug nuts of which would be scattered under his truck.call me a jerk but at least my kids know that dad isnt gonna tolerate someone being an a** infront of them.Firemans move was quite more restrained than most people...i live in a tourist trap surrounded by 7 lakes...i deal with these ppl all the time.Restraint is something i practice but there are times ppl need a reailty check ... so before you flame someone for doing some thing like that maybe just maybe think about the situation before you speak... cause in reality that was the nicest thing that could have happened...and jerks like that honestly need to get things done before entering the ramp....me, i try to stage things cause it does take me about 30 min to prep my boat due to having 3 children to watch out for at the same time...that way i can drop in launch and get out.just a thought or two...

Great, some more to add to the 2 wrongs make a right club.

I am so glad that 99% of the time we have knowledgeable, friendly folk at our local ramps.
Boating is about relaxing, and friendships, not being a chicken and messing with someone's trailer, or letting air out of their tires when they are gone. Cowardly acts IMO.

I know EXACTLY how satisfting that is.
Well done!!:D

Oh heck yeah!!! 2 wrongs make a right!!!

EDIT

Just remember, what goes around comes around!!!... maybe your hull will be breached by a submerged obstacle, maybe your impeller will fail without you noticing, maybe your victim will recognize you vehicle and trailer and you'll return to the launch to find all your trailer and tow vehicle tires slashed?... I dunno, I do know that payback is pure misery when Miss Karma pays her visit though!!!

Somebody made me wait my turn at the ramp once!... how dare they!!! I used the time to make sure all my stuff was in order so I wouldn't be like them.

you're just preaching to the choir, here. Everyone here does it perfect.

Amen brother!!!... pass the rum and the ammunition!!!:D

... yeah, but it'll all catch up with them one day. Can you imagine the screeching and squealing we will hear from the 2 vandals on this board?

... I will personally chuckle and laugh, then remind them of their misdeeds... only to hear them squeal louder... much to my amusement!!!:p

So... I guess I'm the only one besides the 2 vandals that has a lock on their trailer hitch???... or maybe this just makes for a good story/lie??? All the folks I know have locks on their trailer hitches... I can't imagine anyone that wouldn't!
