got up at 3am drove 100 miles to the lake. I put in just before daylight. The lake was like glass, about 62 degress and the moon was still up.I turned the key on my 1995 19' champion W/200hp mariner. It would'nt start. I tried every thing i could think of ,but no luck. This motor has never falled me.Ten years old and never been worked on.SO back home i went. Was planning to take it to a shop to see what was wrong with it. About two days later i was taking stuff out of the boat, and what did i see.....THE KILL SWITCH WAS ON............

That was just about as bad as when I, for some reason, took my fish finder off the swivel base and set it on the kitchen counter the night before. Left the house at 2 or 3am, the kitchen counter is right by the back door which I exited from. Drove to the lake and by the time I got to the launch ramp realized the graph is sitting at home. Didn't want to waste 2 1/2 hours drive so I fished that day blind. At least I didn't have to go home.

Rookies.....sigh...
Yer just not considered a "master" dumba** until..
You get home from work, back up to the boat at 9:00pm, Running as fast as you can...Finish loading EVERTHING (from new line on spools to a fresh roll of toilet paper in a new sealed ziplock bag) at around Midnight.
...Get up two hours, shower, coffee, stumble out the door, Drive 2hrs to the lake. Get there just before daylight.

It's a feeling that cannot be described.
Just the thought process of what actually runs through a persons brain when you turn around to back your TRUCK down that ramp......

Well, I hate to admit it, but I've drove 1hr. to a campground lake to meet up with family for boating and fun and left the boat keys at the house. Left the boat ther, traveled back to the house and back to the lake (another 1hr each way). Hated myself during the whole drive, but got over it as some as I got the boat launched.

As for the kill switch, my bro-in-law hit a wake pulling a tube at the same lake and accidently hit the kill switch. Had me tow his boat in. He had the hatch popped looking for the problem when I noticed it. I said lewt me try and it fired right off. I was tempted to leave him guessing for the rest of the day, but told him anyway.

Me and she herself got to the marina one evening to do a little boating in the river. She got in, fired up and backed the boat off the trailer. I parked the truck and got in the boat. Got reverse and the engine choked and quit.

Tried for an hour to get it restarted. Darn near run the battery down. Cause......forgot to reconnect the fuel line....DOH!!

Just got an '84 Johnson 2hp, had it serviced and brought it home. The mechanic said it was in good shape and ran well. It was much easier to start after I turned on the little fuel valve under the cowling! DUH

My personal favorite was with a 1973 Johnson 65 hp. We took it out with a questionable battery, and true to form, the battery failed. It said you could start it manually in the manual, so we tried and tried to no avail.

Wish that was the end of the story, but for the rest of the season, I kept on trying to start it in the shop with water hose attached. No dice...

Finally after a whole season wasted without going out in the boat, I am sitting in the shop, in the boat, looking at the motor with the cover off saying to myself "Why won't you start??"

And I look down to a little label near the bottom for the choke and see...for electric start, put lever in this position, for manual start, in this position........

and I look down and see that I had put it into manual position........and I put it into electric start, and it fires right up!!!

Season wasted, and oh how so many toll free numbers, and telephone calls, and re-reading the manual for the hundredth time never mentioned this.

Mike

Re: what a dumd ***

I think I got brownies beat. Each year I try to organize and fish in a bass tourney for local police departments. Last year was a two day tourney held on Saturday and Sunday. I worked all day Friday got home about 6 pm then went to work at my wife’s restaurant until 3: am (Saturday). Got home quick nap and on the lake 0630 Saturday. Fished till 3 pm Saturday. Got home at about 5:00 pm, went to bed, about 8:00 pm wife is calling all frantic because none of the waitresses showed up for work, so in I go and work until 3:00am (Sunday) and back on the lake at 6:30 am (Sunday) and fish till 3:00 pm (Sunday). Needless to say this years tourney was only a one day event.

Glad I wasn't there to see that! I'd never have gotten over the laughing fit. Probably would have ruined my day on the lake.
