i was wondering what alt. conversion kit i should get for my mercruiser. its a 4 cyl 165 hp sterndrive. i 'm pretty sure my water cooled volt. regulator is shot and i know its pretty expensive to replace. I've read that the conversion kit is the way to go in the long run.

Just wondering what kit to exactly put on there

There are several kits out there for this. My voltage regulator is still functional, so I haven't yet done this, but my plan is to go with the breezeworks.net kit with a one wire alternator. Some of the kits have you drill into the crank to bolt on a pulley. My 3.7L has a v-belt slot on the crankshaft, so it is redundant and I don't have clearance on my 4winns anyway. This kit seems to be the most economical yet still being simple enough to be reliable.
Good luck, let us know what you choose and how the install goes.

You can also get one from Mercruiser, I won't look for the link unless you ask for it, because it costs about $850.

NO, NO, NO don't spend $600, $700 or more....buy the same kits from Breeezeworks for under $400 or $300.

If boat has power steering you'll need to spend about $375, if no power steering...only about $200 (63 amp alternator $110 and hardware mounting kit $90).

I've used the breezeworks kit and others. Do a Google search if you need to research further...absolutely no need to spend over $400, regardless of you boat's set-up.

Here's another...complete kit for 3.7L with power steering...
