A possible explanation. When you tilt those older engines, it is not unusual for the throats of the carbs of a non running engine to leak fuel into the airbox, and down to the suction line at the bottom. This extra fuel can flood the bottom cylinder and can drain the carbs somewhat and cause hard starting. Leaving the fuel line connected may keep the fuel system "closed" and may cause the draining/flooding to be significantly reduced. You do not need to remove the fuel line after using the engine.
