I have a 2001 150 merc O/b 2stroke I just removed the lower unit to replace the water pump impellar. Everything went smooth. Until I went to re install the lower unit back into the motor assy. I cant get it to line up i guess. I left it in nuetral and even tryd to put it in forward gear. Still same thing goes up almost all the way than stops about an 1.5 . I tried turning the propellar shaft but it looks like its in nuetral cause it doesnt turn the driv shaft. Please what am I missing here??

At 1 1/2" it's the driveshaft missing the spline.

While you're lifting it gently into place, have someone else turn the flywheel a bit. Spline is not lining up.

Re: What am I not doing right?

Thanks for all the replies. Does it matter that I put it in gear and tried it. The shifter shaft is in nuetral. Now i left the motor in neutral. Im waiting for my brother to come over this weekend to turn the crank.
Question is when i put it in forward and turned the crank did i mis align anything? Or can i just put it back to neutral like the shifter shaft is and have someone turn the crank? will it b ok?
Thanks again

Re: What am I not doing right?

As long as both the upper and lower are in the same gear there is no problem. I normally assemble to two in rev. gear that give me the chance to turn the drive shaft by turning the prop and rev. is less likely to jump gear than fwd. in smaller engines.

Re: What am I not doing right?

Update - My brother stopped by last night and we were able to get the unit up and in. Guess having an extra pair of hands helps.
Thanks again for everybodys advise. :)

Re: What am I not doing right?

When I put my foot back on, I always rig up a strong arm and a socket on the flywheel nut, and have the better half rock it when I stab the driveshaft in. Goes pretty slick and it isn't all that tough a job for her at all.
