What an AWSOME boat

Well I was awake a 4 this morning again and out in the garage making sure everything was good to go for the maiden voyage for the SS 18. The weather was absolutly perfect and by the time I made enough noise to wake the wife up at 7:30, we were hooked up and on the way by 8:45. (better than I expected). It is only 65 Km to the lake but there is 29 km of gravel so we didn't get there till 9:45, we were not on the lake till almost 10:30. After a complete tune up, new fuel tank and filter system, some rewiring and trying to straighten out the prop I didn't know what to expect. Pretty much all was great. The only adjustment on the motor was to bring the idle up a bit. The boat runs and drives excellent. The only problem I had was the prop blowing out at higher speeds. The boat had a whale tail and turnbuckle adjustable trim tabs when I bought it. I turfed the whale tail as soon as I brought the boat home and turned the trim tabs down a extra half inch. When we hit the water the tabs lifted the stern so much that at 25 mph the prop would blow out and the engine would rev up. I spend some time on the water readjusting them and it got way better, but still blows out, I think the prop is in far to bad shape and is causing some problem. You can hear it in the video when the rpm goes up. After all the playing around we got 34mph gps at 3900 rpm, not to shaby. A few photos when we got to the lake with fat boy getting her ready.

I can't see the prop blowout with that kind of engine weight, and trim tabs up, and outdrive all the way down.

I'd be looking at the prop might be spun.

Just repowered a boat with a 4.3 V-6. Test rode and almost got on plane, several times. Got the same reaction as what yours is doing. Watched the outdrive for the blowout condition, and saw none. Yup, spun prop. Getting it rehubbed for 64.00

Bob thanks, I will check the hub, I have never has a I/O before and am trying to run it like an out board, do you not trim up to gain best speed and performance? I think I might have just answered my own question? DUH I did look after one of these so called blow out events and the leg was trimmed not all the way down but with in 3 or 4", so you are right the chances of it ventalating and blowing out are nil, it has to have a spun hub.

Yes, you operate the outdrive trim for optimal performance, just like an outboard.

Another thing about the spun hub I noticed, Nothing would happen until this boat was nearly on plane and engine/prop revolutions started to get on up.

This particular boat was a Bayliner Trophy, 21'. Much heavier than any Starcraft, so I can see your boat being on plane then the high rev of a spun hub.

I do hope it's as simple a fix as a spun hub

Bob you are correct it happens jaust as I am getting max rpm and speed. What do youmean by " As simple a fix" It sound like you might supect somethng else?

Bawa, Thanks, the manual says wot to be between 3900 and 4300.

What would a person use as a good economical cruise rpm for one of these?

No, I don't really suspect it to be anything else. I guess what I should've said was you've got a basic problem with an easy fix.

As for economical rpms, just get it planed out and back off to maintain your being on plane. Outdrive trim up concidered. You'll get the feel of the boat in time, and not worry about the tach, although that gauge is most the important gauge on your boat.

The permanant setting of your trim tabs is a give and take. Down some, will get you on plane quicker, but will create drag when on plane. Use them or not, you'll just have to experiment.

Looks great. The 18s sure do ride awesome. Miles better than my 16 did. I love that bow rail.

My experience with a spun prop was that it would spin when getting out of the hole but then would be fine.

Thanks everyone, I put the new prop on and will try it on Saturday at the lake. Hope shes fixed. And yes the ride is way better than my sixteen was and it was good.

Just for information on my end. It was the prop. Newly rehubbed prop worked out great, newly rebuilt engine blew all to hell.

I wasn't the operator, just a passenger observing and lending a hand. I thought it was pushed a little too hard for an initial run, maybe not. Oil pressure and temp remained good even after something let go.

Plenty of blow by and rattlin' noises.

It came loose at WOT.

Bob that's too bad about the motor, any idea what happened other than pushing a new motor too hard?

We got the SS out over the long weekend and put six hours on it, All I can say is AWSOME. The new prop fixed the problem with trimming so The old one had to have a spun hub. The new one I think is a little two much for the motor, but will do for the remainder of this season we now get 32 mph @ wot of 3400rpm. I will deal with it when I do the winter work, bellows, impeller and such.

No, I really don't know, but after reading what the recomended break in time is, I'm sure they'll take it slower this next time.

that is a twin to my 73 ss 120, same color and interior.
never got a gps on mine but i am guessing around 40 mph. With the new points it revs up tp 4200 rpm. i have a 19 prop.
