I don't know what motor you're working on, but......
The trim tab should be slightly to the starboard side when seen from the back of the motor. SOme of the tabs have a mark on the tab and the lower unit that you match up, some just rotate all the way to the "stop". Is it a tiller motor, or remote? If tiller operated, you will know when you run it if the trim tab angle is wrong, because it will pull at wide open throttle one way or another. You can then adjust it where it's needed.
I hope this was helpful,
JBJ

Hello Jb, it is a 1981 johnson 115, and yes it was set a little to the starboard side when i removed , i was just making sure it is supposed to go that way, possibly to correct steering/pulling to one side i am guessing

Its to counter act prop torque. Usually it is to the starboard side. You may have to play with it to get it tuned in once on the water.
